Brong Ahafo anniversary fair opens

Sunyani (Brong Ahafo) 1 Nov. '99

The chairman of the Council of State, Alhaji Mumuni Bawumia, on Friday opened a weeklong trade and exhibition fair at Sunyani as part of activities marking the 40th anniversary celebrations of the creation of the Brong Ahafo region.

The "Dwakesee" fair is to project investment opportunities and economic potentials of the region in the areas of tourism, agriculture, and manufacturing.

About 300 exhibitors are participating in the fair to show to the world industrial and economic achievements of the region since its creation in 1959.

Alhaji Bawumia noted that the fair should provide a better reflection on the region's economic growth to sustain the momentum of development especially of the indigenous micro business ventures.

He therefore advised chiefs, District Assemblies and the Regional Co-ordinating Council to co-operate in addressing the various constraints which are likely to adversely affect investor confidence and interest.

Alhaji Bawumia entreated the local business entrepreneurs to pool their resources and expertise to support the establishment of agro-based industries, which are lacking in the region.

Mr Donald Adabre, Brong Ahafo Regional Minister, called on the investment community to take advantage of the region's resources in agriculture, timber, quarrying, mining, bricks and tiles production.

The Omanhene of the Goaso traditional area and member of the council of state, Krotwamensa Adjei-Ampofo, who presided, said the pace of development of the region since 1959, has "justified its creation".

He therefore urged the government to consider the creation of more regions if it is politically, geographically and economically feasible to do so.

Later, the Tano and Nkoranza districts whose fair day coincided with the opening ceremony showcased their investment potentials.

Ghanaian entrepreneurs urged to take advantage of US Act

Accra (Greater Accra) 1 Nov. '99

Ghanaian entrepreneurs have been urged to seize opportunities to be provided by the US African Growth and Opportunities Act to enhance their exports into the American market.

This is in view of the expectation that the Act will help remove certain barriers impeding the entry of Ghanaian goods into the US market.

Mr Peter Pepera, a deputy Minister of Trade and Industry, made the call in Accra on Friday night when he launched Chicago Club, Ghana, a non-profit organisation of Ghanaians, aimed at fostering business and friendly relations with Americans.

"I am aware that there have been problems of market entry related to our limited domestic export supply base, American import quality standards and other non-tariff barriers".

Government is therefore, putting in place the needed infrastructural, institutional, financial mechanisms and other incentives to enhance Ghana's export supply capacity.

Mr Pepera noted that the country abounds in investment opportunities like mining, forestry, agro-processing, tourism, health and education and urged members of the association to act as ambassadors of Ghana's investment drive.

Mrs Rosina Ghanney, President, said the Club was formed last year after a group of Ghanaian businessmen and women attended the second West Africa/America Building Business meeting in Chicago, Illinois.

She said the Ghana Chapter of Chicago Club, which has sister Clubs in Nigeria and Cameroon, is ready to cement the relationship between Ghana and the US through the African Growth and Opportunities Act.
