Committee to probe improper handling of salaries

The Savelugu/Nanton District Education Oversight Committee (DEOC) has instituted a committee of enquiry into the alleged misappropriation of millions of cedis being salaries of 25 dismissed pupil teachers in the district.
The committee under the chairmanship of Dr Samson Asihene, District Director of Education, is also expected to resolved conflicts arising out of among personnel of the District Education Office, which has given rise to work hold-ups and tension among workers.
Inaugurating the committee, Alhaji Abdulai Harruna, District Chief Executive and chairman of the DEOC charged the members to carry out their task with dedication and urgency to enable them to complete within two-weeks.
Alhaji Harruna assured the committee of the support and assistance of the district assembly and appealed to the general public to volunteer information either in person or in writing to the committee to facilitate its work.
Mr. Salifu, on behalf of the members, thanked the DEOC for the confidence reposed in them and promised their total commitment to their assignment.

The Offinso Sanitation and Decongestion Tigers, a local Non-Governmental Organisation, has received Wellington boots and cutlasses worth several thousand cedis from Mr. Joseph Akwasi-Kumah, the District Chief Executive, made the presentation.
Mr. Akwasi-Kumah presented similar items to the Offinso Antoa District Prevention and Management Club after he and the members had completed weeding a five-hectare beans farm at Adukro, near Offinso.
He commended the volunteers for their self-help spirit and hoped the items would motivate them to work harder to rid the community of filth.
The Reverend Sister Giavanni Philips, Matron, stressed the need for regular interaction between the community and the hospital management to enable the community to appreciate their problems.
Meanwhile, more than 300 volunteers from seven disaster prevention and management clubs at Kokote, Maase, New Town, Antoa, Amoawi, Namong and Ampabame have also been cleaning up the hospital in turns.

Mr. Joseph Akwasi-Kumah, Offinso District Chief Executive, said on Thursday that the low prices of export commodities and increased population growth had made it impossible for the government to absorb all educational expenses.
The government therefore welcomes all donations and assistance that will help to the improve the educational sector, Mr. Akwasi-Kumah when the British Department of International Development (DFID) presented large quantities of books to basic schools in the district at Offinso.
The DCE said the assembly has set up a special committee to investigate the district's poor performance in the Basic Education Certificate Examination and to recommend appropriate measures to arrest the situation.
He called for collaborative efforts from the British Council and the assembly to inculcate the habit of reading in pupils and students in second cycle institutions.
Mr. Howard Harsley of the DFID said the 7.5 million pounds sterling book scheme between the DFID and the Ministry of Education was to supplement government's efforts at improving educational standards in basic schools.
Mrs Nina Chachu, Regional Director of the British Council, called on teachers to ensure that their pupils benefit immensely from the books.
Nana Fobiri Ti, Adontenhene of Offinso, who presided, said the traditional council had released six million cedis for a scholarship scheme for two female students of Akomadan and Dwamena Akenten Secondary schools.

The foundation stone for the construction of a 17 million-cedi chapel for the Bole Church of Pentecost was laid at Bole on Wednesday.
The church is also constructing a 4.5 million-cedi mission house, Reverend J. A. Mensah, regional Apostle of the church who performed the ceremony said.
The District Pastor, Reverend Evans Otchere, said the local church had contributed 460,000 cedis while the regional office of the church was supporting them with half a million cedis towards the project.
Mr. Musah Issah, District Co-ordinating Director, said the church had a major role in helping to transform the people's moral and spiritual lives.
He, however, urged the church to intensify its development efforts in the agricultural, health and educational sectors.
