Four arrested in connection with shooting incident
Kumasi (Ashanti Region) 24 Nov. '99
Four people including two policemen have been placed in police custody pending investigations into an alleged shooting incident at Maakro junction, a suburb of Kumasi, last Friday.
Mr Kasim Karim, a petrol tanker driver, who was shot in the waist, is on admission at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi.
They are Corporal E. K. Ansah of the Brong Ahafo Regional Police Headquarters at Sunyani, Constable Class Two Christian Sagbey of the Zongo Police, Kumasi, who was on operational duties at Buoyem-Techiman, Mr Sammy Addae Yeboah, Assemblyman for Techiman Dwumoh electoral area and Mr. Joseph Kyeremeh, a driver of the Techiman District Assembly.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Richard Baduweh of the Ashanti Regional Police Public Relations Directorate, told the GNA that Mr Yeboah reported Mr Karim and his mate, Kwabena Bonsu to the police that they were selling kerosene at Techiman from a petrol tanker at 5,000 cedis a gallon instead of 3,500 cedis
DSP Baduweh said Yeboah therefore seized the ignition key of the tanker with the intention of causing his arrest but Yeboah managed to start the engine of the tanker by joining some wires and sped off.
He said Yeboah and the two policemen who were armed with service rifles loaded with five rounds of ammunition each, gave the tanker a chase in a pick-up belonging to the Techiman District Assembly and driven by Mr Kyeremeh.
DSP Baduweh said the tanker on reaching Maakro junction was held up in traffic which enabled the two policemen to confront the driver.
A struggle ensued and Constable Sagbey's A.K. 47 rifle, which was on automatic, fired all five rounds of ammunition, some of which hit Mr. Karim in the waist.

Muslims call for probe of Agonya Nyakrom conflict
Accra (Greater Accra) 24 Nov. '99
The Muslim Community in Ghana has called on the authorities to conduct a full and independent probe into the attack on Muslims at Agona Nyakrom and the culprits made to face the law.
It also appealed to the government to take emergency measures to rehabilitate the victims of the attack and create conditions for peaceful coexistence among Ghanaians of all religious beliefs.
Sheikh Osumanu Nuhu Sharubutu, National Chief Imam and Alhaji Salifu Mahama, President of the Council of Muslim Chiefs, made the appeal in a statement signed in Accra on Tuesday.
"If this is not done, then the quest for national peace and harmony might elude us because events such as this threaten the power of the state and its duty to provide safety to all."
The statement urged Muslims in the country to exercise restraint as they have so far done.
"Much as we would like to live in peace with others, we reckon with the fact that even the most peaceable angel cannot live in peace if his neighbour does not want him to."
The incident at Agona Nyakrom on November 12 this year, which led to the death of one Hajia Rahinatu, followed a misunderstanding during a football match between Sidique JSS and Methodist JSS.
