British monarch ends three-day visit to former colony

Accra (Greater Accra), 9th November 99

Queen Elizabeth II and her husband Prince Philip left Accra on Tuesday for Durban, South Africa, after a three-day visit to continue her three-nation Africa tour.

At the airport to see her off were President Jerry John Rawlings and his wife, Nana Konadu Agyeman, the Vice President, Professor John Evans Atta Mills, ministers of state and diplomats.

Visiting Ghana for the second time in 38 years, the 73 year old Monarch and Head of the Commonwealth conferred with President Rawlings, addressed Parliament, was guest of honour at a state banquet and a durbar of chiefs and people held for her, and spent some time with pupils in a public school in Accra.

She came with a 45-member entourage including Foreign Minister Robin Cook.

In South Africa, she would be opening this year's Commonwealth Summit later in the week and visit Mozambique, the only Commonwealth country without British colonial pedigree for 15 hours before returning home.

Also at the airport were school children waving Ghanaian and British flags and members of the British community in Ghana.

The Queen, wearing a white and spotted mauve dress with a white hat, took the national salute with President Rawlings, as a 21-gun salute boomed in the background.

At the gangway, the Queen and her husband waved to the crowd, who responded by cheering and waving flags and white handkerchiefs as her Boeing 767 taxied to take off.

The crowd waved until the aircraft disappeared from the horizon.

The Deputy British High Commissioner, Mr. Craig Murray, said the Royal couple enjoyed the great warmth, hospitality and affection from the teeming crowds that gathered to welcome them.

He said the royal couple was amazed by the enthusiastic and cheerful crowds that turned out during the state drive and on Prince Philip's visit to Tema.

The Queen according to Mr. Murray, said she very much enjoyed the visit and that she was deeply touched by the affection of the people for her and was highly appreciative of the various cultural displays.

The Deputy High Commissioner said this significant trip, is a continuation and reinforcement of a long-standing relationship between the peoples of both countries.

Assembly to construct 2.1 billion cedis Guest House

Kuntanase (Ashanti), 9th November 99

The Bosomtwe-Atwima-Kwanwoma District Assembly has initiated moves to seek financial support for the construction of a 2.1 billion cedis Guest House, under its development plan to open up the Lake Bosomtwe basin to tourists.

All drawings and relevant documentation in connection with a three storey Guest House project intended to be put up at Kokoade, near the lake have been completed.

At its general meeting on Monday at Kuntanase, the Bosomtwe-Atwima-Kwanwoma District Assembly endorsed the approval of proposals presented to the house by the Executive Committee, in respect of seeking funding from outside the Assembly for implementation of the Guest House project.

Already the District Assembly has constructed a 218 million cedi Conference Centre with restaurant facilities at Kokoade, and will therefore need lodging facilities like a Guest House attached to it, before it could attract patronage from tourists.

Presenting the Executive Committee report to the meeting, Mr. I. K. Nyame, the Bosomtwe-Atwima-Kwanwoma District Chief Executive, explained that in view of the magnitude of funds needed for the Guest House project, it will not be prudent to depend solely on the Common Fund and the Assembly's traditional revenue, since that might delay the project.

The DCE said the Assembly is considering either entering into joint partnership with other organisations or seeking loans from financial institutions.

Mr. Nyame told the meeting that the Executive Committee had decided that a comprehensive scholarship scheme should be instituted by the District Assembly to begin to help needy but brilliant students of the district in their educational pursuits.

Bolgatanga Central NPP hold constituency elections

Bolgatanga, (Upper East) 9 Nov '99

A seven-member executive of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for the Bolgatanga central constituency was elected at the weekend amidst boycotts by a section of the party's supporters.

This was after Alhaji Seidu Sumanu, a former fire service officer defeated Mr John Ayine, a crafts manufacturer, by 66 to 55 votes to become the new constituency chairman.

Following Mr Ayine's defeat, his supporters decided to boycott the rest of the elections and left the venue.

The rest of the candidates were elected unopposed with Mr Adikre Nyaaba as first vice chairman, Mr Awuni Adombire, second vice chairman, and Mr George Akumasi Ayamga, secretary.

Others are Mr Barhama Mohammed, assistant secretary, Mr Attah Kojo, treasurer, and Mr Simon Abanga, organiser.

Colonel (rtd) George Minyilla, a leading member of the party who conducted the elections, advised the supporters of the party to close their ranks and remain united.

He said the NPP would win both the presidential and parliamentary elections in the district next year.

Col Minyilla charged the new executive to go round all the villages and promote unity among the party's supporters.

In an earlier development, members of the party expressed their displeasure with both the regional and district officials of the electoral commission for allegedly demanding five gallons of fuel and two litres engine oil before coming to conduct the constituency elections.

The party members refused to comply with the demand and conducted the elections themselves.
