Asantehene's gold cup open kicks off in June
Kumasi (Ashanti), 17th May 99
The Annual Asantehene's Gold Cup open Golf competition is scheduled to kick off in Kumasi from June 3 - 6, this year.
Dr. H. B. Asafu-Adjaye, President of the Kumasi Golf Club, said when members called on the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II at the Manhyia Palace, that the three-day competition would attract both amateur and professional golfers from all over the country.
Dr. Asafu-Adjaye formally invited the Asantehene to grace the occasion with his presence and invited him to be the chief patron of the club.
This offer is in keeping with the long standing tradition existing between Manhyia Palace and the Club under which previous Asante Kings held the position of chief patron.
The club presented drinks and a ram to the Asantehene on his successful ascension to the Golden Stools.
Otumfuo Osei Tutu thanked the management and members of the club for the honour and spoke of plans to hold consultations with them with a view of exploring ways they could assist in the promotion of health and education in Ashanti.

Soccer-Olympics pip All Blacks 1-0
Accra (Greater Accra), 17th May 99
Accra Great Olympics continued their winning spree in the ABC premier league with a 1-0 victory over Swedru All Blacks in their 13th week match played at the Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday.
A 52nd minute header by Wisdom Abbey ensured the "Wonder club" their fifth successive home victory to maintain the top spot of the league table.
All Blacks had the better of the exchanges after kicking off but it was Olympics, who made the first attempt at goal when Amui Quaye sent a cross to unmarked Samuel Monnie in the All Blacks vital area, but Matthew Konadu cleared the danger for the "Black Magicians".
In the 16th and 34th minutes, Abbey missed two goal scoring opportunities when he shot Nii Noi Dowouna's pass off target in the first attempt, while he delayed in the All Blacks '18' for Eric Marfo to tidy up in defence in a second attempt.
Charles Taylor of Olympics also had his turn after 39 minutes when he rounded three All Blacks defenders but his final shot at goal was blocked for a corner kick which was wasted.
Olympics maintained the pressure on the "Black Magicians" and nearly went ahead on the stroke of half time, but goalkeeper Nana Bonsu denied Taylor of the opening goal, when he parried the striker's close range header for a corner kick.
All Blacks resumed the second half on a high note in a bid to repulse the incessant pressure Olympics mounted on them in the first half. They came close in the 47th minute but Kofi Apetor's long range shot was saved by the woodwork.
In the 51st minute, All Blacks' skipper, Charles Ampiah sneaked through the Olympics defence and laid on a pass for Kwesi Kyere who shot off target with only goalkeeper Mohammed Alhassan of Olympics to beat.
A minute later, Olympics' Quaye took a pass from midfield, raced down the right flank and sent in a cross, which Abbey nodded home for the only goal of the match.
In the 55th minute, goalkeeper Nana Bonsu saved All Blacks from conceding a second goal when he stretched to full length to block Samuel Monnie's goal bound shot.
Two minutes later, Olympics brought on Gariba Yusif for Amui Quaye while the "Black Magicians" pulled out Dennis Odoom for Willie Brown in the 59th minute.
The substitutions nearly paid off for the Swedru lads as they came close in the 62nd minute but Kwesi Kyere saw his shot at goal hooked off the line by Yaw Hammond after goalkeeper Alhassan of Olympics failed to save it first time.
The Black Magicians, who were probing for the equaliser, brought on fresh limbs in the 68th and 76th minutes. Kwaku Agyemang and Razak Imoro came on for substitute Dennis Odoom and Kwesi Asante respectively.
From then All Blacks started attacking from all angles and in the 83rd minute, Tahiru Briamah of Olympics had to throw his body on the ground to save a goal bound shot from the foot of Willie Brown.
Briamah was on hand again for the Wonder club with a timely intervention a minute later when he deprived All Blacks' Kofi Apetor off the ball in the penalty area.
He got injured in the process and had to be substituted by Nii Boye Sam.
Apetor, who fell in the box from that tackle, was shown the yellow card when he challenged the referee's decision for play to continue.
Goalkeeper Alhassan of Olympics ensured his side's solitary lead for the three points at stake when he saved John Pobee's shot at goal during injury time.
