Soccer-Heart pip Villa 3-0 to brighten their chances
Accra (Greater Accra), 3rd May 99 –
Accra Hearts of Oak on Sunday brightened their chances of moving into the next stage of this year's Champions' League competition, when they beat S. C. Villa of Uganda 3-0 in their first leg one-eighth match at the Accra sports Stadium.
Hearts in an unusual pink shirt and shorts attacked from the blast of the whistle of Nigerian FIFA referee, Joro Yabilsu and wasted four successive corner kicks.
In the 13th minute, the ''Phobia Boys'' had a chance of shooting ahead but their new found "goldenboy" Ishmael Addo, wasted a spot kick after Joe Fameyeh's pass hit the hand of defender Sserwadda Deo in the penalty area.
Within a spate of three minutes the young boy whose inexperience had a telling effect on him wasted a begging chance which could have unsettled the visitors.
In the 23rd minute, however he laid on a perfect pass for Fameyeh to shot into the right far corner of the net for the opener.
Galvanised by that goal, Hearts threw everything into the game but in some few cases, were caught off guard by the visitors with fast counter attacks.
Just as the Ugandans were gaining some ground, Hearts increased the tally in the 37th minute through a freekick taken by Osei Kuffour.
Hearts brought on Robert Saba for injured Emmanuel Adjogu in the 47th minute to add more bite to the attack.
The Ugandans conceded their third and final goal in the 53rd minute when Skipper Jacob Nettey raced with the ball from his own half of the field then cut into the defence of the visitors before releasing a thundering shot whose impact sent goalkeeper Elengesa Ramazan, crashing into his net as he tried to save it.
The visitors tried hard to redeem at a least a goal but to no avail.
Line up (Hearts): James Nanor, Amankwah Mireku, Jacob Nettey, Justice Ampah, Sani Wahab, Osei Kuffour, Kennth Sarpong/Osumanu Amadu, Ben Acquaah, Ishmael Addo, Joe Fameyeh, Emmnauel Adjogu/Robert Saba. Kumasi (Ashanti) , 3rd May ’99 –
Kumasi Asante Kotoko scored a lone goal against El-Masry of Egypt in the one-eighth first leg Africa cup winners cup match played at the Kumasi Sports Stadium on Sunday.
The twice Africa champions were a pale shadow of their former selves as they played not only below form but left a question mark on their ability to go through to the quarter-final stage.
Kotoko played like an ordinary side, as they could not string their passes together and play as a team.
The sturdily built Egyptians frustrated Kotoko with their manly tackles and cautious approach to the game, at times slowing the game down to a walking pace.
El-Masry kicked-off forcing the first corner-kick under a minute as Kotoko looked unsettled but the Egyptians could not utilise it.
Kotoko hit back in the ninth minute as they went on the offensive earning a corner-kick in the process but the kick taken by inside right Mohammed Polo fell at the feet of wing-half Joseph Hendrick who shot off target.
Four minutes later, El-Masry’s defence was eclipsed and with the goalkeeper out of position, Adu-Poku had the easiest chance of putting his side ahead but his header missed the target.
After this, the Egyptians resorted to delay tactics and the Liberian referee, Somah Mambo, had to flash the yellow card in the face of outside-left Efat Hassan who delayed in effecting a throw-in in the 24th minute.
Kotoko went on the rampage in the 41st minute but the goalkeeper of El-Masry, Hassan Abdelaal sprawled on the ground to push Adu-Poku's shot to corner.
Kotoko brought in Emmanuel Ampiah for fullback Annor Kofi after recess but could still not lift their game up even though the Egyptians played on the defensive.
In the 49th minute Kotoko piled up pressure on El-Masry firing on all cylinders but the Egyptians blocked the shots by Adu Poku and Gordon Ablordey.
The Egyptians came under intense pressure in the 61st minute as George Arthur sliced through the defence and placed the ball on the path of Ernest Boateng who fumbled.
A minute later, George Arthur gave way to Kwaku Duah who failed to impress. Kotoko shot into the lead in the 69th minute when Adu Poku hit the back of the net after Gordon Ablordey mesmerised the defence and crossed almost on the line.
Cheered on by the crowd, Kotoko attacked boring holes in the Egyptian defence but the attackers wasted all the chances.
El-Masry made two changes in the 76th minute when Omar Gamal took over from Aki Gadalla and Mahmoud El-Hassan replaced Efat Hassan. Kotoko also brought in George Siaw for Ernest Boateng in the 78th minute, which brought bite into the attack but his colleagues could not utilise the chances he created.
The spectators filed out of the stadium moody as they reflected on Kotoko's chance in the second leg match in Cairo in two weeks time.
Line up: Kotoko: Constant Mantey, Annor Kofi/Ampiah, Samuel Bakai, Gabriel Opoku-Ware, Kalilu Dramani, Joseph Hendrick, Mohamed Polo, George Arthur/Kwaku Duah, Ernest Boateng/George Siaw, Adu-Poku, Gordon Ablordey. El-Masry: Hassan Abdelaal, Mohamed Abdu-Dahab, Ashour Hanoun, Anwar El-Dasourky, Hamad Ibrahim, Ahmed Nowafak, Aki Gadalla/Omar Gamal, Yasser El-Shanawan, Ahmed El-Sayed, Tamau El-Wahas, Efat Hassan/Mahmoud El-Hassan

Tema (Greater Accra), 3rd May ’99 –
Afienya United registered their first win in the 11-week-old ABC Golden Larger Premier football league when they beat visiting King Faisal 2-1 in their match played at Tema Sports Stadium on Sunday.
King Faisal who dominated the exchanges in the first half, scored the opening goal in the seventh minute through centre forward Kwadwo Anane.
The visitors however recoiled into their shells after the goal and allowed the homes team to dominate.
It came as no surprise when Afienya levelled up in the 50th minute through a penalty taken by left halfback Dennis Boateng.
Centre forward Ablade Morgan scored the final goal for Afienya in the 55th minute when his low grounder beat goalkeeper Nicholas Opoku Ware.
Disaster struck Afienya in the 80th minute when left winger Sampson Amoah was shown the red card by Referee E.F. Okuampah of Koforidua for second bookable offence, but King Faisal could not capitalise on their numerical strength to deem the goal.

Sunyani: Visiting Swedru All Blacks beat Bofoakwa Tano 2-1 in their played at the Sunyani Coronation Park.
All Blacks put the home support of Bofoakwa behind them played a determined gamewere up by a goal in the first half.
The visitors gave every indication that they were in for a kill right from the commencement of the game on the orders of referee J.K. Agbeko of Kumasi.
They however wasted an early chance at goal when Kwaku Kyere failed to utilise a beautiful pass from the left flank.
Immediately after that Bofoakwa's Osei Kwame was also on target but woefully wasted it.
Fortunes continued to sway until in the 11th minute when inside left Kwaku Kyere scored for All Blacks.
A high ball landed right in front of Kyere and notwithstanding the stiff opposition from "Disco" Nana Gyamfi of Bofoakwa, Kyere managed to run with the ball and shot into the net with goalkeeper Damba Mohammed looking on.
Urged on by their supporters, Bofoakwa counter attacked but wasted all scoring chances that came their way till the end of the first half.
Back from recess Bofoakwa maintained pressure on their opponents but like the first half, their attackers squandered all the begging chances.
The visitors had their second goal through Adom in the 67th minute before Bofoakwa pulled one back through a penalty kick scored expertly converted by Kwami Antwi in the 83rd minute.

Cape Coast : Substitute Ekow Ghansah of Sekondi Hassacas was the toast of fans when his last minute goal enabled his side to draw one-one with Cape Coast Ebusua Dwarfs in their match at the Cape Coast Sports Stadium.
Hassacas had to play with 10 men when defender Atta Yawson was shown the red-card for dangerous play in the 67th minute but they managed to hold the homesters in check until Ghansah got the vital equaliser.
A powerful right footer from the right flank went straight into the waiting hands of Dwarfs goalkeeper Marquaye Spike.
The goalkeeper, however, fumbled with the ball and it fell on the itching foot of Ekow Ghansah who slammed it into the roof of the net.
Dwarfs, who regarded the match as "home-coming" one after being banned from their Cape Coast base for crowd violence since the end of the last season, started the match in a whirlwind fashion but had to wait until the 30th minute for the opening goal scored by outside left, Stephen Owusu

Koforidua: Poor goal keeping and a leakiong defence made Real Tamale United to suffer a 1-4 thrashing by Power F/C in their match played at Koforidua.
Power, who played a good game demonstrated their determination to carry the day when within the first five minutes they made dangerous incursions into the goal area of RTU but wasted the chances.
Power however took the lead in the 19th minute when a long range shot from left full back Alex Gyan hit the chest of goalkeeper Saraju Mohammed for Power's inside left Patrick Twumasi to tap the ball into the net.
In the 21st minute Power’s inside right Charles Asamoah increased the tally to two. Four minute later Power nearly registered their third goal when a goal bound shot from the foot of right half back Julien Amu which had already beaten Saraju hit the cross bar and bounced back into play.
RTU lifted their game up and in the 52nd minute pulled one back through Alex Gyimah.
The RTU boys however could not sustain their rhythm and in the 58th minute Asamoah headed home Power's third goal.
