VEEP opens 72nd national annual convention
of Ahmadiyya Mission

Vice-President Aliu Mahama on Thursday opened the 72nd national annual convention of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Mission, Ghana, in Accra with a call on Ghanaians to strive towards a high sense of morality.
He said government's declaration of zero tolerance for corruption is to create an enabling environment for progress and development, adding, "a nation that is not built on morality is like a house built on sand without a foundation".
The three-day convention on the theme "Prospects and challenges of the new millennium: the moral factor" is attended by 40,000 delegates from Ghana, the United States, Germany, France, Burkina Faso, Togo, Benin and Cote d'Ivoire.
The delegates will discuss topics like "Development of education in Ghana- the Ahmadiyya contribution; the need and importance of religion; family life education and Islam and good governance.
Alhaji Mahama urged religious leaders to continue to emphasise the need for high standards of morality to promote probity and accountability.
He called for concerted efforts for poverty alleviation, the control of HIV/ AIDS pandemic and the realisation of the government's vision of promoting technological advancement.
Vice-President Mahama commended the Ahmadis for carrying out its missionary activities in a peaceful manner and also contributing to advancements in the health, education and agricultural sectors.
Maulvi A. Wahab Adam, Ameer and Missionary in charge of the Mission in Ghana, noted that massive corruption is starving the nation of much needed foreign investment and creating mistrust for the government.
"It is apparent, therefore, that no meaningful national economic programme is possible without the eradication of corruption or at least its reduction to the barest minimum."
