Guidebook on pre-school education launched

Akropong-Akwapim (Eastern Region) 05 July 2001

A guidebook for teachers on creative pre-school education has been launched at Akropong-Akwapim in the Eastern Region.

The 46-page book titled: "Learning-through-playing", has Mrs Paula Van Den Berg, a Dutch retired teacher and an art-therapist for children as the author.

The book, which provides firsthand information on learning about the Ghanaian child, seeks to evaluate and assemble all information, knowledge, ideas and strategies, which when put together would enhance the total development of the pre-school child.

Topics treated in the book include language development of the child, drawing and writing, creativity and activity, as well as, the sensory development of the child.

According to Ms Berg, after organising several workshops for schools in the district between 1999 and 2001, she realised that the approach to kindergarten teaching was rather "dull and too academic".

She, therefore, decided to write the book, which introduces creative approach to education in pre-schools, since according to her: "Learning through playing makes children more active, curious and inventive".

The Reverend Ama Afo Blay, Eastern Regional Director of Education, in a speech read for her expressed the hope that the book would complement those that the Ghana Education Service had already produced to enhance teaching and learning at the pre-school level.

She, therefore, urged teachers in the whole region to make effective use of the book for the full development of their pupils.

Dr (Mrs) Eugenia Quist, Akwapim North District Chief Executive, who launched the book, commended Ms Berg for her immense contribution to education in the district.
