Corpses re-buried at homes to make way for road works

Ho (Volta Region) 22 Feb.

Mr E.V.K. Ogah, Volta Regional Registration officer of births and deaths, has advised chiefs along the Kpando-Dambai and Jasikan-Nkwanta roads to allocate new and suitable areas for cemeteries and discourage their people from exhuming and reburying corpses in their homes.

Mr Ogah said as a result of the road constructions going on in the area, the people are exhuming bodies of their relations for burial in their homes.

In a statement to the press in Ho at the weekend, Mr Ogah said such practices are against the registration of births and deaths law (act 301).

He said the act states in section 24 that "it shall not be lawful to bury a dead body elsewhere than a burial ground authorised under this part, except with the permission of the local authority."

It states that "subject to the provisions of the coroners act of 1960 (act 18) no person shall exhume or after burial remove any corpse except under sub-section one of this section."

Mr Ogah said the practice is, therefore, unlawful and a health risk for which offenders are liable to prosecution.

Police advised to respect rights of the people

Sunyani (Brong Ahafo), 22 Feb.

The Brong Ahafo Regional Police Commander, Mr R.K. Safo-Kwarteng has called on police personnel to respect the constitutional rights of the people and exhibit a high sense of self discipline in order to win the support and co-operation of the public.

He said the ability of the police to effectively maintain law and order is dependent on the level of confidence between them and the public hence the need for personnel of the service to conduct themselves in a manner that would win them the support of the people.

Mr Safo-Kwarteng was speaking in Sunyani at the weekend during the celebration of this year's "Wassa", the annual get-together of policemen.

He urged the public to report any policeman who misconducts himself to the regional police command for redress.

Mr Safo-Kwarteng deplored the disrespectful and unco-operative attitudes of some people towards the police, saying this situation undermines public order.

The Regional Minister, Mr Donald Adabre, who was the guest speaker, commended police personnel in the region for their hard work which has helped to make the people to live in peace.
