Place emphasis on study of culture
Sekondi (Western
Region) 14 April 2003- Odeneho Gyapong Ababio II, President of the National
House of Chiefs, has called on the Ministry of Education to place more emphasis
on the study of Ghanaian history and culture in schools.
Addressing a
children's mock house of chiefs meeting as part of activities marking the
National Festival of Arts and Culture (NAFAC) in Sekondi on Friday, he said if
children were well educated on their culture, they would not be influenced by
foreign ones and lifestyles.
Some children cannot
speak their local dialect because they had not been taught by their parents at
home and said the teaching of Ghanaian languages should be stepped up at the
basic level to make them conversant.
Joseph C. Quansah,
Shama Ahanta East Metropolitan Director of Education said children as future
leaders of the country should be made to have an insight into Ghanaian culture.
He advised them to
learn the essence of the country's culture and said respect for authority,
discipline and a high sense of morality were elements of Ghanaian culture. The
children urged the various houses of chiefs to address the issues of child
labour and slavery in Ghana and appealed to the government work hard to make the
economy more bearable to enable parents cater for their children.
They also appealed to
the government and non-government organisations to establish more job training
centres to assist the youth to acquire skills to minimise unemployment.
