Police Commander calls for ban on sale of sachet water at stadiums

Accra, Sept. 2, GNA - Mr Kofi Boakye, Regional Police Commander has proposed that a ban be placed on the sale of sachet water and alcohol in and around at all national stadiums to rid it off any nasty incidence.

Paid policemen were overwhelmed at the Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday as irate fans hurled unto the tartan tracks missiles including bagged water (pure water), bottles and ripped plastic chairs following a questionable 59th minute equalizer by Asante Kotoko in their top-liner premier league against archrivals Hearts of Oak.

Yusif Chibsah shot the ball in from Stephen Oduro's free kick after goalkeeper Eben Dida who was brought down was cruelly forced by striker Shilla Alhassan to spill the ball in the six-yard box.

Cape Coast-based referee Essel-Walker hesitated and raised his head to seek an unnecessary confirmation from his assistant number two, Nicholas Dwomoah, who held his flag down and run towards the centre.

Hearts met the bad goal with a spontaneous protestation and play was held up for 10-minutes during which vexed fans of the defending champions threw missiles and ripped off the plastic chairs while the police stood helpless.

Dida who collapsed in the melee could not return unto the pitch and his place taken by Sani Mohammed.

Mr Boakye is proposing as an alternative, the use of disposable rubber cups for drinking water in the stadiums to avoid a repeat of the May 9 Accra Sports Stadium disaster in which 127 soccer fans were killed.

In spite of the seemingly poor showing by the police- most of whom were seriously enjoying- to contain the situation, the regional commander praised his men for a good job done.
"Out of 100 per cent, I will give them 80 per cent", he said.

He admitted though that under the situation there was very little the police could do but said the police will rely on a CID video camera to arrest the notorious fans.

Mr Boakye said four of the irate fans were however, arrested after the match and were sent to the charge office awaiting the next line of action.

Dida now out of coma

Accra, Sept 2, GNA - Eben Amarh Dida, goalkeeper of Accra Hearts of Oaks who went into coma following a melee during which he was apparently kicked on the head and rushed to the 37 Military Hospital has now regained consciousness, according a hospital spokesman.

This was during the titanic clash between Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko at the stadium on Sunday.

Dida who was taken to the Hospital after first aid treatment by the medical team at the stadium failed to revive him from unconsciousness is now recovering.

The GNA Sports was told at the Hospital that it took the player almost four hours after he had been admitted to gain his consciousness and said to be now out of danger.

However, the hospital authorities declined allowing the GNA Sports to speak with the player but Stephen Akwetey, Team Manager of Hearts who was at the hospital earlier expressed joy that the keeper has been revived.

Meanwhile, the team's top striker, Ablade Morgan who was admitted earlier at the same hospital following a clash with Kotoko's Joe Hendricks is expected to be discharged Monday morning, the hospital spokesman assured.

A third player, Nasiru Garni, who had a clash with security men after the game, was treated and discharged on Sunday evening at the same hospital.

It will be recalled that Yusif Chibsah shot the ball into the net from Stephen Odoru's free kick after goalkeeper Eben Dida was brought down by striker Shilla Alhassan for him to spill the ball in the six-yard box.

Cape Coast-based referee Essel-Walker hesitated and raised his head to seek confirmation from his assistant number two, Nicholas Dwomoh, who held his flag down and ran towards the centre.

Hearts met the "bad goal" with a spontaneous protestation and play was held up for 10-minutes during which vexed fans of the defending champions threw missiles and ripped off a number of plastic chairs while the police stood helpless.

Hearts protest against referees Walker, Djomoah

Accra (Greater Accra) 2 September 2003 - Defending League Champions Accra Hearts of Oak have lodged a formal protest over what they described as biased officiating by referee Samuel Essel-Walker and his assistant Nicholas Djomoah in their 18th-week Kinapharma Premier league match against archrivals Asante Kotoko at the Accra Sports Stadium last Sunday.

Cape Coast-based referee Essel-Walker allowed Kotoko's Yusif Chibsah's 59th-minute questionable equaliser to stand after goalkeeper Eben Dida was badly hurt in clash with striker Shilla Alhassan and subsequently spilled the ball.

The statement, signed by Ashford Tettey-Oku Administrative Manager of Hearts, condemned the performance of the two referees and advised the Professional League Board (PLB), the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and the Referees Appointment Committee to "freeze their appointment for all future matches involving Hearts".

It said the club has noted with great concern the inconsistency and bizarre circumstances that led to the last-minute appointment of referee Essel-Walker "to the joy of some Kotoko officials".

According to the statement, referee Essel-Walker lost control of the game, which nearly resulted in re-enactment of the 9 May Stadium disaster.

It accused the referee of bias and selective application of the laws of the game in favour of Kotoko. "We will not make a declaration of persona non grata on any referee for poor officiating whether induced or genuine but will not sit unconcerned while the precious lives and careers of our players are put at risk", the statement said.
