Main stock index sustains gains, but volumes low
Accra
(Greater Accra) 10 September 2002 - The chiefs and people of Vakpo Traditional
Area in the Kpando District of the Volta Region, have appealed to the Ministry
of Trade and Industry to help link them to foreign and local investors to
establish a garden egg cannery in the area.
Togbe
Gbogbolulu V, Paramount Chief of the Area, at the weekend said Vakpo and
surrounding areas including Gbefi, Aneta and Anfoega area produced tonnes of
garden eggs and it was on record that the best national garden egg farmers came
from Vakpo.
Speaking at
a durbar to climax weeklong funeral rites for Togbe Gbogbolulu IV, he said the
chiefs and people were ready to give out a vast land for agricultural purposes,
which would serve as employment for the jobless.
It would
also curb the increasing migration of the youth to the urban areas in search of
non-existing white colour jobs. He expressed regret that due to transportation
and preservation difficulties most of the garden eggs got rotten leading to
frustration and loss to the farmers.
Togbe Gbogbolulu
appealed to the Ministry of Agriculture to rehabilitate or release to the
people the defunct Animal Husbandry Department structures in the area, which
were lying idle and were deteriorating to the people for use.
He has also
requested the government to upgrade the Agadzi Clinic, the only clinic in the
traditional area, to a polyclinic status to enable it to attend more
effectively to the numerous patients.
He called
on the government to rehabilitate the Kpeve-Kpando road. On discipline, Togbe
Gbogbolulu said he had instituted plans with the various Sub-Chiefs as well as
the Police to instil and maintain discipline among the citizenry. He cautioned
the people against the HIV/AIDS menace and advised the youth to desist from
premarital sex while the elderly should stay faithful to their partners.
Mr Seth
Asorwoe Akwensivie, Kpando District Chief Executive, donated 30 million cedis
on behalf of the District Assembly towards the Vakpo Water Project and pledged
that the concerns of the people would be appropriately addressed.
He
commended the chiefs and people of the Area for the peaceful, matured and
exemplary way they conducted the burial and final funeral rites of Togbe
Gbogbolulu IV. Those present included, Ms Sena Akua Dansua, Member of
Parliament for North Dayi and Madam Esther Ofori of the Ghana International
Trade Fair, Accra, who chaired the function.
