Sunyani (Brong Ahafo Region) 19 September 2001 - The Management and Technical team of Bofoakwa Tano football club have vowed that the club will defeat champion club, Accra Hearts of Oak on Sunday to make Sunyani the waterloo for the big clubs.

 

Mr Joe Bennet, Vice chairman of the club, told the Ghana News Agency sports, on Wednesday that Hearts supporters in Sunyani "were right in cautioning their idol club to beware of us, because we won't compromise our determination to maintain our unbeaten home record this season.

 

"We are going all out to secure victory over them because we also want to feature in an international competition to elevate our status".

 

Mr Bennet said to avoid infiltration the club's players are in a secret camp to prevent any agent from influencing them.

 

"If Hearts have "chapters", Bofoakwa too have "hunters" and just as they always want to see their club as champions, our supporters too will like to see us on top. Come Sunday our performance against Hearts, will be more superb than what they experienced against Kotoko last Sunday".

 

Mr Bright Obeng, the club's coach said that his boys are well prepared psychologically, physically and technically to face Hearts "boot for boot".

 

He assured the club's supporters that Bofoakwa would triumph over the champion club at the end of the game on Sunday.

 

"A win against Hearts or Kotoko by a young coach will be a remarkable achievement to boost his morale to perform even better", Coach Obeng added.

Minister expresses gratitude

 

Accra (Greater Accra) 19 September 2001 - Papa Owusu Ankomah, Minister of Youth and Sports has expressed profound gratitude on behalf of the government, to all the agencies and institutions that assisted in making the Star Premier league match between

Kumasi Asante Kotoko and Accra Hearts of Oak at the Kumasi Sports Stadium incident-free.

 

"The Ministry thanks all and sundry for proving that sports can indeed bring us together as a nation."  

 

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Minister commended the management of the two clubs and their supporters for their level of commitment to fair play and true sportsmanship before, during and after the match.

 

He further praised the Ghana Football Association (GFA) for ensuring competent officiating. Papa Ankomah said Ghanaians were particularly content with the security

arrangement put in place and with the assistance of the Ministries of the Interior and Defence in conjunction with the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council that ensured peace and gave confidence to spectators.

 

He said the Ministry viewed this act of sportsmanship as a good sign through which the nation could realise the best in its people when they co-operate with one another.

Golf-Asantehene golf in Kumasi on Oct 6

 

Accra (Greater Accra) 19 September 2001 - The Asantehene Open Golf championship which was postponed last month, now comes off at the Kumasi Golf Course from Saturday, October 6 to Sunday, October 7.

 

A spokesman for the club who announced this in Accra on Wednesday, said the two-day 36-hole scratch event, open to amateur and professional golfers, is being sponsored by Ghana Breweries Limited (GBL).

 

He said the competition shall be played in accordance with the rules of golf as approved by the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews, the Ghana Golf Association and in accordance with the local rules of Kumasi Golf Club. The championship is expected to attract over 200 participants.

 

He said the entry requirement for the event which would also be played alongside the Youth championship event for the first time, is handicap 14 for the Men while the Ladies is pegged at handicap 24.

 

The professionals event will begin from Wednesday, October 3 with the finals coming off on Sunday, October 7.

 

A flag hoisting ceremony under the auspices of Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu the Second, will be held on Friday, October five.

 

Government officials as well as chiefs from the traditional council are expected to grace the occasion.
