Court acquits student charged with assault

Sunyani (Brong Ahafo) 18 September 2001 - A community tribunal in Sunyani, on Monday acquitted and discharged Samuel Ofori Gyasi, a University of Cape Coast student, charged for assaulting a referee in a match between Kumasi Asante Kotoko and Tano Bofoakwa in Sunyani.

The tribunal, presided over by Charles Adjei Wilson, dismissed the case saying "the arrest was wrong and has no basis in law".

Gyasi, 22, was charged with assaulting Referee Kwesi Ghartey from Cape Coast during the Star Premier League match on September 9.

Counsel for Gyasi, Solomon Oppong Twumasi urged the tribunal to dismiss the case because his client "was a victim of mistaken identity".

He submitted that police investigations did not disclose the identity of the culprit. The prosecutor, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Alex Yartey Tawiah agreed with counsel's submission and said investigations still continue to arrest the culprit.
