Hearts thrash Goldfields 3-0

Accra (Greater Accra) 13 September 2001 – Adroit dribbler Charles Taylor, capped a masterful performance with an clinical 58th minute goal as Accra Hearts of Oak thrashed Obuasi Goldfields 3-0 in their 18th week Star Premier League outstanding match played at the Accra Sports Stadium.

He picked a through pass from team-mate Emmanuel Osei Kuffour, outside the penalty area, raced with it, side stepped his markers on the left flank and deceived lanky goalkeeper Mike Robertson with an unusual left footed shot which sealed into the net.

Robertson thought Taylor was going to lob the ball to his teammate in the six-yard box.

Kuffour who has clinched a three year deal in the United Arab Emirate but expected to leave the country after Sunday's epic encounter with arch rival, Kumasi Asante Kotoko, opened the scores with an easy header after Taylor had rounded the Goldfields defencemen from the left flank and had raised the ball over Robertson in the 26th minute.

Disaster struck Goldfields after the goal, when enterprising Eric Boakye, was given the matching orders for elbowing Taylor in the 33rd minute in what was his second bookable offence.

Hearts took advantage of the numerical strength to bombard the Miners goal area with incessant raids. During one of the raids, Ishmael Addo hit the word work in the 33rd minute while Kuffour wasted a 41st minute chance in front of goal.

But Goldfields young midfielder Stephen Amo nearly stunned the capacity crowd against the run of play when he took the entire Hearts defence unawares. His final delivery however, hit the cross bar.

Hearts introduced "prodigal son" Emmanuel Yartey who came on for Joe Ansah in the 59th minute and was welcome with a thunderous cheers from the fans.

His flawless passes aided his side as in the 81st minute he initiated a move from the midfield for Kuffour to lay on a good pass for Ishmael to complete the rout.

Goldfield made a last minute effort to reduce the tally but their defender-turned-striker Princeton Owusu Ansah's wasted an 89th minute opportunity.

Hearts now stretch their lead with 45 points, four more than Kotoko who are closest.

The homesters multiplied in attack but were put in check by the defence of Arsenals.

New National Youth Council bill soon

Accra (Greater Accra) 13 September 2001-Papa Owusu-Ankomah, Minister of Youth and Sports, has said his ministry is in the process of enacting a National Youth Council (NYC) Bill to replace National Revolutionary Council (NRC) decree 241 (1974).

The new bill is intended to restructure the NYC as a facilitator and to make youth empowerment its priority.

The Minister was interacting with representatives of the Committee of Youth Associations (COYA) in Accra on Wednesday as part his familiarization meetings.

As a prelude to this meeting, the Ministers last month met with members of the NYC at the Kaneshie Sports Complex, the Winneba Sports College and the National Sports Council.

Papa Ankomah said government through the National Youth Council (NYC) intend to play a paramount role as prime mover of the youth in terms of facilitation and coordination.

He said it is in this regard that the NYC is being encouraged to be more proactive in its approach to win the confidence of youth groups and organisations adding "that it is the only way through which such organisations would see the NYC as a collaborator rather than a competitor".

The minister decried the way in which adults have hijacked leadership of youth organisations and said ways should be found to encourage youth to run their own affairs since at the moment they feel disconnected from the process of decision-making.

He announced that the Youth Empowerment Committee set up by the Vice President to review current youth activities including the youth policy and suggest ways to inject some dynamism into the youth, has submitted its report.

"Government intends to critically study the report which would be referred to all stake holders for comments before submitting it to a more vigorous and extensive debate at the national level," he said.

He urged COYA to strengthen the association at the national level and place considerable emphasis on its activities at the regional and district level to take care of youth at the grassroots who need their activities the most.

"Government is acutely aware that the youth expect the change in government to have a direct reflection on their well being and welfare".

"This is so because we believe young people are the best resources for promoting national development" he said
