Parents pleads with court for custodial sentence on their son

Cape Coast (Central Region) 12 September 2001 - The parents of an 18-year-old boy, last Tuesday pleaded with a Cape Coast Circuit Court to impose a custodial sentence on their son, who had been arraigned before it for forgery and stealing.

The court, however, sentenced De-Bright Kweku Amissah, a former student of Mfantsipim secondary, to a fine of four million cedis.

He pleaded guilty for forging a cheque for two million cedis and stealing property valued 4.770 million cedis belonging to his parents, Benjamin Amissah, and Madam Cecilia Arhin.

The court heard that in June this year, Amissah stole a leaflet of a Ghana Commercial Bank chequebook belonging to his mother and forged her signature and succeeded in cashing two million cedis.

The parents reported the matter to the police at Cape Coast and Amissah was arrested. The court released Amissah on bail but ordered him to re-appear on August 31, after he has finished writing his final examination.

However, while on bail he again stole a number of items belonging to his parents, estimated at 4.770 million cedis, between August 8 and 22.

The prosecution told the court that the boy admitted stealing the items, which include some electrical appliances and said he had given them to an Alhaji who could not be traced by the police.

Meanwhile, the court has adjourned to Tuesday September 18, the case in which five final years students of Adisadel college stole 82 'thunder shot' cartridges from the Central Regional Police Armoury.

The adjournment is to enable the police to complete its investigations to enable them to prefer the appropriate charges against the students.

They are Stephen Kudoto, Kwaw Afebi-Yanney, Donald Abili, Selikem Ahiadzro and John Aboagye-Gyimah, who have each been granted five million cedis bail.

Tribunal issues warrant for travel agent's arrest

Accra (Greater Accra) 12 September 2001 - An Accra Circuit Tribunal on Tuesday issued a bench warrant for the arrest of a travel agent when he failed to appear before it to answer a fraud charge.

George Otabil, 44, was alleged to have defrauded Daniel Adjei, a businessman, of 3,600 dollars with the pretext of obtaining travelling documents for his junior brother.

In March last year, Adjei parted with a total of 4,600 dollars when Otabil assured him of a visa to enable his younger brother, Alex Aboagye Acheampong, to travel to London.

The accused person allegedly obtained a fake visa for Acheampong, who on reaching Portugal, was deported to Ghana.

The accused person refunded 1,000 dollars to Adjei and promised to pay the rest of the money but he failed to honour his promise.
