Accra
(Greater Accrra) 07 September 2001 - A 27-year-old driver who broke into the
room of his employer and stole 24,000 pounds sterling was on Thursday sentenced
to 17 years imprisonment with hard labour by an Accra Circuit Court.
Bright
Kumah, alias Ayigbe Killer, who pleaded guilty to two counts of unlawful entry
and stealing was sentenced to 10 years and 17 years respectively. The sentences
will run concurrently.
Kumah,
however, found not guilty to a third count of possession of firearms without
authority and possession of narcotic drug.
The
tribunal chaired by Mr Ziblim Imoru ordered the arrest of Hanna Akosua Mensah,
21, his girlfriend, for dishonestly receiving 60 million cedis as her share of
the booty.
The
tribunal also ordered that a shop, a car and 831,000 cedis belonging to the
accused should be given to Ms Regina Fiawoo, the complainant.
The
Prosecution’s case was that on March 11 this year, Ms Fiawoo received 24,000
pounds sterling from her brother to undertake a project in Kumasi.
She kept
the money in her travelling bag, locked her door and went to church.
Immediately Ms Fiawoo left the house, Kumah who was living with her, broke into
the room, took the money and disappeared.
Ms Fiawoo
detected the theft at about 0400 hours the next day, but could not trace Kumah.
Last Sunday, however, Kumah was traced to his hideout at Atebubu in the
Brong Ahafo
Region and was arrested.
The
prosecution said when the accused was interrogated, he admitted having stolen
the money and told the police that he used part to run a shop, purchase an Opel
Vectra and furnish his room. He also gave 60 million cedis to his girlfriend
Akosua Mensah to operate a drinking spot at Adeiso.
When his
house was searched, a locally manufactured pistol, three live cartridges and
eight wrappers of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp were found.
