Hearts beaten at Tamale

Tamale (Northern Region) 06 August 2001 - An 87th minute goal by RTU's inside right Komi Adzagba, broke the undefeated record of Accra Hearts of Oak in the Star Premier League, when the two sides met on Wednesday at the grassless Kalanda Park in Tamale.

RTU leapfrog from the seventh position on the table to the fifth on 25 points while Hearts maintain their thin lead with 42 points.

The match was heading for a draw until RTU's  Nurudeen Wemah took the ball from his half and dribbled three Hearts players on the run before lobbing it to Komi to control with his chest and fired into the net.

RTU had earlier scored in the 78th minute, but was disallowed by Kumasi-based referee G.K. Zorvie.

When the final whistle was blown, the supporters rushed onto the field and carried the lone-goal hero Komi and the goalkeeper Abukari Sulemana shoulder-high.

The match itself was played mostly in the mid-field and characterised by near misses.

Hearts' Edmund Copson, nearly scored in the 15th minute but shot wild when he had only the goalkeeper to beat.

It became a ding-dong affair with RTU slightly ahead till the end of the first half.

Hearts mid-fielder Joe Ansah and RTU's central forward Ibrahim Mugu were the worse offenders as they squandered several scoring chances.

Hearts head coach, Cecil Jones Attuquayefio said he was disappointed about the score and attributed the defeat to the absence of his key players including Osei Kuffour.

But when the reporter told him that Kotoko had also lost, he said, "you don't mean it," apparently happy that the league table will not change at the top.

Faisal, Bofoakwa draw

Kumasi (Ashanti Region) 06 August 2001 - Agile goalkeeper, Mohammed Alhassan of Tano Bofoakwa made dramatic saves to thwart all the efforts of Kumasi King Faisal attacking machinery to leave their Star Premier League match scoreless after 90 minutes of power soccer.

Even when he got injured in the 56th minute in an attempt to save an aerial ball, which everybody thought would not allow him to continue keeping the posts, he returned to save a dangerous situation in the 63rd minute.

Bofoakwa kicked-off under the instructions of FIFA referee Ebenezer Adegah of Ho but Faisal quickly took over and nearly scored but Eric Gawu's shot missed the post narrowly.

There was a hold-up in the third minute when Seth Opoku of Faisal collided with Kojo Opoku of Bofoakwa. Seth Opoku could not return and was replaced by Dada Kwadwo.

Faisal determined to collect the three points at stake, made several incursions with Eric Gawu hitting the cross bar in the 14th and 16th minutes respectively.

In the 37th minute, Yaw Acheampong who needed to tap the ball into the net wasted a beautiful cross from Ben Wilson.

Both teams made some substitutions but it did not alter the results.

Dawu scores home victory

Dawu (Eastern Region) 06 August 2001 - Ibrahim Labaran, a veteran striker of Dawu Youngsters on Wednesday scored his first goal for the season to give the Dawu boys, the full three points when they beat visiting Kwaebibirem United 1-0 in their match played at Dawu.

Labaran scored his goal through a header in the seventh minute when a cross from the right flank found him in front of the goal area and he intelligently headed it to the blind side of goalkeeper Theodore Abu.

It was a sweet revenge for Dawu, who suffered a humiliating 1-4 thrashing at the hands of Kwaebibirem at Asuom in the first round.

After Labaran's goal, Dawu dominated play but failed to penetrate the defence of the visitors.

Back from recess, Dawu maintained the tempo and came close to increasing the tally when Mohammed Polo's 54th-minute long-range shot, hit the crossbar and bounced back into play. Awudu Adama wasted the resultant kick.

Kwaebibirem came into the picture briefly, however, when Dawu took over, they wasted an 87th minute chance by substitute John Plange.

Okwawu lose in violent match

Koforidua (Eastern Region) 06 August 2001 - Irate fans of the Okwawu United nearly lynched an official of Suhum Maxbees during their Star Premier League match at the Koforidua Sports Stadium, which Maxbees won 2-0.

The official, Uncle Ebo, Welfare Officer of Maxbees, had attempted to rescue a fan who was being beaten by the Okwawu supporters for no apparent reason in front of the VIP Stand. The fans hurled stones, sticks and any object that they lay hands on till he fell unconscious.

He received deep cuts on his forehead and other parts of the body and was rushed to the Koforidua Government Hospital where he has been admitted.

Angered by the action of the irate Okwawu fans, the Maxbees scanty followers also vented their spleen on their opponents.

The situation compelled Tema-based referee P.K Azizar to bring proceedings to a temporally halt for almost 30 minutes to enable him confer with the match commissioner, Mr Godwin Oklu.

The police had to call for reinforcement before the match could be resumed.

The match further experienced occasional hold ups in the later stages of the match when the Okwawu fans again began throwing missiles against the assistant referees, the match commissioner and even the policemen detailed to maintain law and order at the stadium.

The police however managed to make some arrest and placed them in police custody.

Centre forward Anthony Appiah scored both goals for Maxbees in the 40th and 75th minutes.

Goldfields shock Kotoko 2-0

Obuasi (Ashanti Region) 06 September 2001 - Two devastating free kicks by Robert Amoako one in each half, gave Obuasi Goldfields a 2-0 victory over Kumasi Asante Kotoko in their mid-week premier league at the Len clay Stadium.

Despite the loss, Kotoko are still second on the league table with 41 points as their archrivals Hearts who also lost 0-1 to Real Tamale United maintain their thin lead on 42 points.

Both teams started the game more cautiously but it was the Miners who exhibited more upfront action throwing the first chance away as Nana Arhin Duah's volley went off target.

Kotoko came close to breaking the deadlock in the 17th minute but Michael Robertson saved Nana Frimpong's deceptive header.

Amoako opened the scores for Goldfields in the 27th minute, when he converted a free kick few metres away from the '18'.

The two teams stepped up their game thereafter, but it was Kotoko who wasted three corner kicks in succession in the 28th, 31st and 38th as against Goldfields' in the 34th and 41st minutes.

The Miners nearly increased the tally in the 48th minute but Amoako's second free kick hit the cross bar and rebounded into play.

Urged on by their few supporters, Goldfields kept the fight to their visitors wasting another scoring chance in the 55th minute as Ofosu Amoah with keeper to beat shot wide.

Kotoko quickly brought on Kwaku Duah and Joe Okyere for Joe Sam and Nana Frimpong while Goldfields replaced Aminu Musah with Asare Boateng but it was the

Miners who raised the tally to two in the 71st minute through another free kick by Amoako.

Olympics registers dream victory

Accra (Greater Accra) 06 September 2001 - Accra Great Olympics beat visiting Adansiman United by a lone goal to put some smiles back on the faces of their longsuffering supporters in their 17th- week Star Premier League match played at the Accra Sports Stadium.

The victory which is the third registered by Olympics so far, came as early as the 16th minute through hard working Kobina Dodzie who volleyed in a well placed header from Emmanuel Adjei.

Olympics pushed hard from kick off as they harassed the goal area of Adansiman with gangling striker Albert Nkansah leading the onslaught. However, poor shooting robbed them of many scoring chances.

In the second half Adansiman stepped up their game, as they brought on Nii Aryee Hammond for Ben Amankwa and concentrated their attacked from the left flanks but could not find their way through the defence of Olympics.

With the game drawing to a close, J. B. Danquah nearly made it two in the 89th minute but Antwi in post for Adansiman stretched to push a goal bound shot to touch.

Accra (Greater Accra) 06 September 2001 - Gemini Life Insurance Company a leading insurance company associated with Sports in the country has insured Ghana's Joseph Agbeko 100 million cedis as he fights Mike "Iron Bomber" Kizza of Uganda in the vacant World Boxing Federation (WBF) bantamweight title at the Kaneshie Sports Complex on Friday night.

Mr Eric Adane, Executive Director in charge of marketing who presented the insurance cover at a pre-fight conference in Accra on Wednesday said the package is to absorb the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) from any liability.

The 100 million cedis forms part of a renewable insurance package of 840, million cedis to the GBA under two broad names-Promotional Insurance cover and Personal accident cover.

He said the promotional cover, is to provide financial security for licence boxers with the GBA, which include 50 million cedis for Commonwealth bouts, 20 million cedis for African fights and 10 million cedis for any other fights sanctioned by the GBA.

Mr Adane said under the second policy, the GBA is to enter into an agreement with the boxers for a monthly contribution, which would be invested by GLICO, so that the boxers could recoup his investment at retirement.

He said in times of death or any eventuality, GLICO would give 4 million cedis plus whatever would accrue from the boxer's contribution to his dependants.

Mr Adane said plans are advanced for his company to stage a big boxing night in the country.

Ghana would be staging her fifth world title bout on Friday after Floyd Klutei Robertson in 1964, D. K Poison ('75, '76 ) and Azumah Nelson in 1993.

Agbeko whose record stands at 11-11 and nine KOs has predicted a fifth round knockout, while Kizza 16-15-1 is hoping to finish Agbeko in the sixth round.

"I'm here for business and cannot be scared by Agbeko", Kizza said.

Irrespective of the outcome of Friday's fight, Kizza is scheduled to mount the ring in November this year, to fight Mike Brode of the UK in a Commonwealth title bout.

Agbeko, originally scheduled to fight Lewis Mwambo of Zambia had his opponent changed in the last minute, after the Zambian lost to Kizza in the East and Central Africa Championship in Bologna, Italy, last two weeks.

The show sanctioned by the WBF, Ghana Boxing Authority and being put together by Life Time Promotions and Management Syndicate, would staged seven other bouts including three title fights.

SOS Peace Games schedule for September 21

Accra (Greater Accra) 06 September 2001 - The global peace games for youth and children, celebrated world-wide and proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in November 1988, would be staged in Ghana on Friday, September 21, at the Tema SOS Village.

The Decade programme, which kick-starts this year, would focus on and develop the leadership skills of children and youth in the mission of global friendship, non-violence and peace.

It would also involve children and youth in making decisions about their lives.

Mr Kojo Quarshie, Programme Director of Play Soccer, an NGO funded by FIFA and one of the four organisers, said the idea is to inculcate in the children, the importance of a peaceful world through games and to forestall any future war.

He said the programme would include a cultural display and a play to highlight the effects of war and why the need to have a peaceful world.

"It would combine sports, music, education and any other activity for the purpose of involving children and youth to achieve the targeted results", he added

The other organisers are the UN, FIFA and the SOS.

According to the UN programme, countries are to organise the events within the month of September, preferably on the 11th, which is the International Day of Peace.

Mr Quarshie, who has been associated with soccer administration in the country for a very long time, said even though the programme is supposed to be nation-wide, it is dependent on the response they would get from their targeted sponsors.

He said almost every financial institution and some selected companies in the country have been written to, and expressed the hope that it would receive favourable response.
