GAFCO drags customer to court over one billion cedis debt

Accra (Greater Accra) 06 September 2001 - A businessman, who allegedly issued several dud cheques totalling one billion cedis for payment of flour supplied by the Ghana Agro Food Company (GAFCO) appeared before a circuit tribunal in Accra on Thursday.

Victor Okata Asare, Managing Director of VICKKASA Trading at Mallam Atta in Accra, pleaded not guilty to seven counts of issuing false cheques. The tribunal chaired by Mr Mohammed Nabon admitted him to a 50 million-cedi bail with a surety to be justified with landed property. Asare would reappear on September 25.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Elizabeth Alormatu told the tribunal that since 1996 the accused had been issuing cheques to pay for items supplied by the company.

She said between April and July last year, GAFCO realised that seven cheques issued by the accused person totalling over one billion cedis were dishonoured. GAFCO gave the accused ample time to pay up in instalments but he failed. DSP Alormatu said Asare has so far refunded 210 million cedis.

Driver's mate in court for abduction

Wa (Upper West) 06 September 2001 - The Wa Circuit Court has began hearing a case in which a 19 year-old driver's mate, Abdulai Seidu, allegedly abducted a teenage girl and kept her for two months as a wife.

The accused who pleaded not guilty to abduction was granted a five million cedi bail when he appeared before the court on Wednesday.

The prosecutor, Inspector Stephen Dobara told the court presided over by Mr Gibon Adzagli that last June, Madam Salamatu Amidu, a resident of Kpaguri in Wa reported the disappearance of her 16-year-old daughter to the police.

Several announcements were made over the two local FM Radio stations to trace her but to no avail, until the girl's mother spotted her in town in the company of the accused on August 11.

She raised the alarm and the accused was arrested by some people at the scene and handed him over to the Women and Juvenal Unit of the police.
