Tribunal imposes fine on father and son for traffic offences

Tema (Greater Accra) 05 September 2001 - The Tema (TDC) Community Tribunal chaired by Captain Philip Agbeyome (rtd) on Tuesday, imposed a total fine of 700,000 cedis on a 17 year-old senior secondary school student and his father for various motor offences.

The father, Eric Nii Azumah Quao, a consultant, pleaded guilty to permitting a minor and an unlicensed driver to drive his vehicle.

The son also pleaded guilty to driving without licence, careless driving and unlawfully causing harm to one Edmund Owusu Afriyie, a driver.

They would go to jail for six months each if they failed to pay the fines. The tribunal heard that on June 19, Mr Afriyie was driving a vehicle from Tema Township towards Community 12.

On reaching Community 10, near a bakery, the student, who was driving his father's vehicle from a minor road failed to stop at the junction and ran into Mr Afriyie's car injuring him and causing extensive damage to it.

A third vehicle that tried to avoid the accident somersaulted and landed on its roof. The case was reported to the Community Two Police and during interrogation, it was discovered that the student had no driving licence. His father, who allowed him to drive, was arrested.
