Tennis - Gunther wins satellite master tournament

Accra (Greater Accra) 14 September 2000

The impressive exploits of Ghana's number one seed Gunther Darkey at the ITF satellite tournament continued on Wednesday with him adding the Masters trophy to the men's single title he won last Saturday.

Gunther beat tournament's second seed Dirk Stegmann of South Africa, 6-0, 6-4 at the centre court of the Accra Sports Stadium Tennis Court.

Playing in front of a fairly large crowd, Gunther started in a whirlwind fashion as he dominated his opponent from the baseline with intelligent cross-court volleys and passing shots.

Such was the domination in the first set, that a frustrated Stegmann who found nothing going his way, smashed his racket on the court, breaking it in the process and promoting the referee to caution him as Gunther won 6-0.

The second set was a vastly different game as Stegmann switched from the baseline, to play an aggressive serve and volley game, which Gunther found difficult to cope with.

Gunther who looked tired, during the second set had to dive deep into his reserves to break the opponent's serve in the third game, but Stegmann who, showed a lot of spirit remained undaunted and broke back immediately in the next game.

The game from then onwards went with serve as both players fought hard for every point and played some wonderful tennis that drew applause from the stands.

Stegmann who played better in the second set ironically doubled faultered in the ninth game to give Gunther the break.

All that Gunther needed was to hold his own in the tenth game which he won 6-4.

In the doubles finals, Mauritius Marcel Borgault and Gianluca Bazzica of Italy beat Swede Daniel Norberg and Britain's James Auckland 1-6, 6-3, 6-4.

Soccer - Ade Coker-CHALCA case adjourns for the forth time

Accra (Greater Accra) 13 September 2000

An Accra high court on Wednesday adjourned for the forth time a case in which Mr. Joseph Ade Coker, Vice-Chairman of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) is praying the court to quash a decision by the Ghana

League Clubs Association (GHALCA), dismissing him from office.

Ruling of the case has now been fixed for next Thursday, September 19, in Accra.

The case was adjourned today because the judge, Justice Victor Ofoe was attending a seminar.

On Monday, August seven, the court granted leave to Mr. Joseph Ade Coker, who is also the chairman of the Accra Great Olympics to apply for an order of certiorari to quash the decision by GHALCA dismissing him from office.

Consequently, Mr. Ade Coker was to remain in office until the determination of the substantive case.

On Wednesday, August three, GHALCA passed a vote of no confidence in Mr. Coker as their Vice-Chairman claiming it was within the ambit of their constitution.

CHALCA forwarded its decision to the GFA that its entire membership had unanimously voted out Mr. Coker as the Vice-Chairman of the association.

The letter signed by its Chairman Mr. J. Y. Appiah said by their decision, Mr. Coker should no longer represent GHALCA on the GFA as its Vice-Chairman.

Mr. Ade Coker is on the GFA board by virtue of his position in GHALCA.

Clause (4) of article 12 of the GHALCA constitution, states that, "an officer can only be dismissed, expelled or suspended or otherwise removed from office by a complaint in writing stating that the officer to be removed, shall be presented to a judicial committee who shall adjudicate on the case and pronounce judgement.

The judgement of the judicial committee shall be subject to an Appeals Tribunal to be set up by the General Assembly."
