Parliament urged to repeal law on criminal
libel

Nana Ogyabea Badu Ehuren, Chairman of the Wenchi Community Tribunal has called on parliament to initiate action to repeal the criminal libel law to eliminate the restrictions it imposes on journalists in the performance of their statutory roles.
Nana Eburen was answering questions at a public forum organised by the media foundation for West Africa to end a two-day training programme for community radio stations and Ghana News Agency stringers at Wenchi. Media Foundation is an NGO that seeks to promote press freedom and independence
He said extant laws and regulations that are harmful to the strengthening and expansion of the rights and freedoms of the media must be reformed.
Political party representatives and activists were among the participants and most of them were of the view that the law should be removed from the statute books. This they said would enable journalists to perform their duties without unnecessary hindrances.
