Ho (Volta Region) 06 September 2000

Nana Brefo Boateng III, the National Co-ordinator of the National Festival of Arts and Culture (NAFAC) 2000, on Tuesday gave the assurance that despite delays in the release of funds, the festival would still come on.

He expressed the hope that the 1.5 billion cedis budgeted for the festival would be released by the end of September for the necessary structures to be put in place for the festival to take off.

He was speaking in a telephone interview with the Ghana News Agency in Ho on the progress so far made towards the preparation for the festival, which is scheduled for November 10 to 19 under the theme "Sustaining a culture of peace, unity and development in a millennium".

Nana Brefo said currently performing groups are being groomed, while artefacts, arts and cultural works are being collected for exhibition.

Mr. Obed Ababio, Volta Regional Director of the National Commission on Culture said some of the activities would include highlife, traditional, and choral music competition, beauty pageant and seminars.

Others are regional day celebrations, special days for Women, children and the youth in addition to community outreach programmes and international friendship activities.

He said all these would be climaxed with a national durbar of chiefs and a street carnival dubbed "Hiplife Nite".

Mr. Ababio appealed to government to expedite action on the release of funds for the NAFAC 2000 and the completion of the regional theatre.
