Rising tennis star Gunther, scoots into next round

Ghana's
tennis rising star, Gunther Darkey, scooted into the next round of the Third
ITF West Africa Men's Satellite Circuit with a 6-1, 6-1 straightest win over
fellow Ghanaian, George Afarku at the Accra Sports Stadium Tennis Court on
Monday.
Gunther,
runners up and quarter finalist in the first and second editions held in Lome
and Legos respectively last month, proved too strong for his opponent from the
start.
He combined
swift movement, power services and stamina to outwit his fellow young friend in
their best-of-three encounter watched by a handful of spectators.
Gunther,
24, a key member of the Golden racket that qualified the nation to zone three
in the Davis Cup early this year, expressed optimism of getting to the finals
in an interview with the GNA, adding that with home supports, he could emerged
the champion in the three week circuit.
Gunther who
seeded fourth in the competition would play Maku Sunday, a Nigerian, in the
next round. Sunday dismissed Couprie Christophe of Gambia 6-4, 6-3.
In the
other matches, Van Wyk Coenie of South Africa beat Azonubi Henry of Nigeria
6-2, 6-1; Ghanaian Akwesi Ahenkora bounced Sodji Kodjio 6-2, 6-2 while another
South African, Smith Shaun, won 6-1, 6-4 over Ivankovic Bodizar of China.
Thirty-two
players from all over the world are competing in the circuit, aim at improving
individual rankings.

The players
of the winning teams of the 1963, '65, '78 and '82 Africa Cup of Nations are to
furnish the Technical Directorate of the Ministry of Youth and Sports with
their contact address for an important assignment.
A statement
issued by the ministry on Monday said due to the urgency of the a
ssignment,
the address of the old players are to reach the ministry by next week Friday,
September 15.
