J.J responsible for the killings

The Independent reports on its front-page that Brig. Nunoo Mensah, former member of the PNDC and leading member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) on Sunday, September 3, attributed the recent killing of innocent civilians by the Military to President J.J Rawlings.

He is reported to have said this at an NPP rally in Accra on Sunday. According to the paper, Brig. Nunoo said soldiers have been allowed more access to the guns to scare innocent civilians, adding that this will be checked by the NPP.

He is reported by the paper to have said that NDC’s attribution of the state of the economy to external factors is in itself a vindication of the fact that they have run out of ideas, that if the NDC is retained in power, most people will suffer by the year 2004.

He is also reported to have advised the people to be extra vigilant at all polling stations to check electoral malpractices.

The Statesman

Busy week for NPP

This week, attention of political observers will be focussed on the New Patriotic Party (NPP), as it prepares for its congress at Ho, the Volta Regional capital, on Saturday to present its vice presidential candidate and endorse its manifesto, observed the Statesman.

The paper says the congress, which comes almost three months after the NDC congress will be preceded on Thursday with a meeting of the party’s National Executive Committee, followed on Friday by a National Council meeting to approve flagbearer J.A Kufour’s nominee.

It says though party officials are tight-lip on the issue, impeccable sources have confided in the paper Kufour’s decision to nominate Alhaji Aliu Mohammed, a Tamale based contractor.

According to the paper, on Friday the Oda branch of the party will hold a prayer night from 10pm to 2am to commit the party and the country to the hands of God.

The next major event of the party after the Ho congress will be special fund raising gala night at Golden Tulip Hotel in Accra on Friday, 15th September.

The Guide

Atta Mills swerves Obed

The Guide says, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Prof. Atta Mills has run away from the thorny "Obed Asamoah for running mate" by nominating Mr. Martin Amidu as his second in command.

The move, according to the paper, is however seen by some as a bow to mounting pressure from the Northern caucus.

According to the Guide, until last weekend, fans of Dr. Obed Asamoah were pushing for his nomination with Owuraku Amofa 's Egle party being the most vociferous after it categorically endorsed the Mills-Obed card at its recent congress.

The paper has it that as at press time, it was too early to assess the effects of the surprise selection on the groups under the NDC.

The Daily Graphic

It's not a personal triumph

The Daily Graphic reports the Deputy Attorney-General, Mr Martin Amidu, who was on Sunday night chosen as the NDC presidential running mate as saying that he regards his nomination as a victory for consensus but not as a triumph for himself.

"I don't think it was a win. I surely believe that there are so many people within the party who are competent and capable. It is a big family; I'll just think that they chose me because there was consensus that I should come out of the lot to assist in achieving the ideals of the party and to move the nation forward," he is reported to have told the Ghana News Agency in an interview.

Mr. Amidu, according to the story, furthered that he looks forward to giving Professor Mills a loyal and dedicated service to enable him to achieve his objectives for the people of Ghana, citing consensus building, peace and reconciliation for development as ideals he cherishes in the party's manifesto.

Girl, 17, goes into labour in exam hall

The Graphic in another front-page capture says a 17-year-old expectant Junior Secondary School (JSS) student went into labour while taking her first paper in the just-ended Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) at Adwafo, near New Abirem in the Birim North District of the Eastern Region.

She was therefore taken to a nearby clinic where a midwife delivered her of a baby boy shortly on arrival.

The strong-willed girl is said to have however surprised her colleagues and supervisors when she resurfaced the following morning at the examination hall to continue with the rest of her papers.

The paper says Mr. J.A Essel, District Director of Education, commenting on the issue said even though he would not encourage school girls to become pregnant, the girl showed a lot of courage and determination in defying her conditions to go through her examination.

The Evening News

NDC members file writ against party

The lead story of the Evening News says Mr. Isaac Garrious Baah and Mr. Martin Arku, NDC Ward Secretary for Tsito 'A' and branch chairman for the Abutia Kloe, respectively in the Volta Region, have filed a writ at the Ho High Court restraining Mr. Francis Aggrey Agbotse, MP, from standing as the party's parliamentary candidate for Ho West Constituency in the 2000 election.

The two are said to be also restraining the National Executive Council (NEC) of the NDC from nominating and endorsing Mr. Agbotse as the party's parliamentary candidate.

According to a GNA report, hearing has been fixed for Tuesday, September 19.

In a statement of claim, the plaintiffs are reported as having indicated that the first defendant is the incumbent Member of Parliament for Ho West while the second is the body authorised by NDC constitution to ensure that the policies and programmes of the party adopted by the national congress are carried out.

According to the plaintiffs, the NEC unlawfully and unconstitutionally nominated, endorsed and approved the incumbent MP as the constituency's parliamentary candidate without any regard to the party's constitutional requirements.

They are therefore claiming court order to restrain Agbotse from holding himself out as candidate and another order to declare the NEC's purported nomination, endorsement and approval of the incumbent MP as the party's parliamentary candidate, unlawful and unconstitutional.

The Crusading Guide

MP debunks Konadu's story!

The crusading Guide in its banner story publishes Hon. Dominic Azumah’s reaction to questions concerning an accident that he was involved in with Sellassie Djentuh, former boyfriend of Ezenator Rawlings, which was referred to by the first lady, asking whether the MP's submissions debunks the First Lady's story.

Mrs. Rawlings is reported as having told Joy FM that the owner of the vehicle (an MP) that was bumped into by Sellassie Djentuh went to the Castle six months after the accident and asked if he could see President Rawlings to help him fix his car because he needed it for the impending elections.

Hon. Azumah, according to the Crusading Guide, in answer to a question is reported as having stated that he has had to apply to his insurance company, which had asked him for a final police report before they (company) could fix his vehicle for him.

"But I did not go to the President to ask for my vehicle to be fixed. I have never done that." He was quoted to have stated.

According to the Crusading Guide the MP’s version of the incident was different from Nana Konadu's claim that he had told soldiers at the Castle that he wanted to see the President's motorbike that had been involved in the accident.

"On our visit to the Castle, we were not shown any motor bike of the President or anything", the Crusading Guide quotes Mr. Azumah as having stated.

When asked whether Sellassie did attribute ownership of the bike to the President, he said he first heard about that from the police after their (police's) visit to the Djentuh's.

The Ghanaian Democrat

We have done very well

The Ghanaian Democrat reports Dr Obed Asamoah as having asked Ghanaians to put their faith and trust in tried and tested hands than to try any new adventures.

According to the paper, Dr Asamoah, assessing the political landscape before the December 7 elections said the game has become interesting with the emergence of small parties thereby improving the chances of the big ones.

Dr Asamoah who made these observations in a recent interview on Choice FM, an Accra radio station, also said that a lot of Ghanaians appreciate what the ruling NDC government has achieved over the years and would, therefore, not hesitate to vote for the party for the third time.

On why he thinks the NDC would win the elections, Dr Asamoah is reported as saying that the ruling party is on record for having used power for the benefit of the people and not for self-development.
