Ghana and Zambia in a clash over coach

Accra (Greater Accra Region) 30 October 2001 - One of the two expatriate coaches targeted for the Ghanaian bench at Mali 2002 has almost been snatched by Zambia. This has come at a crucial stage of the Black Stars’ preparations when the Ghana Football Association is determined not to leave any stone unturned.

A crucial objective towards that goal is to supplement the efforts of caretaker Coach Osam-Duodu, probably with the services of an expatriate.

Mr Gomes, the Portuguese national who was in charge of the Angolan national team between 1996 and 1998, when he masterminded a Nations Cup berth and an abortive World Cup qualification campaign, is the man in the centre of the clash.

The fifty-year old former international footballer, whose coaching career is rich with some 20 appointments including both club and national sides, has his coaching career being enriched by clubs such as Victoria Setubal, S. L. Benfica and G. D. Aves.

While the FA struggled under its own indecision, the authorities in Zambia got wind of the manoeuvres and stepped in with a definite deal for Gomes who is almost certain about taking them to Mali.

Meanwhile Osam-Duodu remains in firm charge of the national team with 21 home-based players still camping at Winneba in the Central Region. – Graphic Sports

Former Ghapoha skipper speaks out

Accra (Greater Accra Region) 30 October 2001 - Former Ghapoha Skipper, Richard Nii Noi has finally explained the reasons behind his lacklustre attitude towards training. He enumerated these as unfair treatment meted out to him by the club’s management and what he perceived to be a waste of his talent since his arrival at the phobian club early this season.

He indicated that he initially declined to join the Phobians for fears of being sidelined in view of the player glut in the team, and indicated that his irregular appearance in matches has affected him greatly. Although he agreed that Hearts was a bigger club than Ghapoha, he felt he could fit into the defensive set up of the club easily.

Ever since his arrival at the club, he has not been in the good books of fans and technical team due to his recalcitrant stand. He however agrees that his attitude, which some fans say is habitual and unfortunate, is having a negative impact on the entire playing body.

In another development, fans of the club have expressed misgivings about the attitude of certain key players like Awuley Quaye Jnr and Odartey Lawson for their consistent truancy, which led to their suspension. The management of the club has however asked the two key players, to resume training or be expelled from the club. - Hearts News

Takoradi Secondary School opens VALCO tourney in style

Accra (Greater Accra Region) 30 October 2001- Takoradi Secondary School (TADISCO) of the Western Region opened the 4th VALCO Football Tournament for Secondary Schools with a resounding 4-2 victory over Asanteman Secondary School of Ashanti Region at the Accra Sports Stadium on Monday 29 October 2001.

Ironically it was Asanteman that started as the aggressors and went ahead as early as the 4th minute through Eric Amponsah, who beat the defence of Tadisco to head home the first goal.

The Tadisco lads quickly regrouped themselves and took control of the game with Bartholomew Budu controlling the attack from the left wing. Yakubu Armah equalised for Tadisco in the 20th minute when he connected a low shot from Budu's cross to beat Cosmos Amoako in post for Asanteman.

Tadisco's domination continued and in the 23rd minute took the lead when goalkeeper Amoako could not make a first time save of a shot from Armah to allow James Jackson to finish off the rebound.

The second half was just five minutes old when Tadisco's Emmanuel Armah chipped the ball over onrushing goalkeeper Amoako from a 30-yard range to make victory certain for the Takoradi lads.

Dejection settled into the game of Asanteman and was again caught by the skilful strikers of Tadisco when in the 58th minute James Jackson dribbled past four Asanteman defenders to score the fourth goal.

In a match played earlier, Aggrey Memorial Secondary School from Central Region beat Bolgatanga Secondary School, Upper East Region 2-1. Yusif Armarboi and Joseph Amissah scored for Aggrey while Faisal Gimiyu scored Bolgatanga's only goal.
