Zakkour to be responsible for any attacks on Hasaacas

Accra (Greater Accra Region) 25 October 2001 - The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has threatened to hold Mr Harry Zakkour, Chief Executive of Accra Hearts of Oak, personally responsible for any attack on supporters, players and officials of Hasaacas whenever they play in Accra.

A statement signed by Mr Ampem Darko, General Secretary of the GFA, said the FA considers the threat issued by the Hearts chairman to attack supporters of Hasaacas any time they come to Accra as most irresponsible.

It said, with the 9 May 2001 tragedy, which claimed 126 lives still fresh in memory, and the recent spate of hooliganism that has engulfed soccer in the country, the FA would not tolerate such unguided statements.

The statement said that the FA would institute an enquiry into the alleged assault of Hearts' players and officials with the view of punishing those implicated.

It would be recalled that Mr Zakkour personally threatened to lead Hearts supporters to retaliate against the bad treatment meted out to Hearts officials by the supporters of Hasaacas during their 24th week league encounter at Sekondi in the Western Region, if the FA failed to discipline Hasaacas. Hearts lost that particular match by a lone goal.

Hearts beat Feyenood but fans are disappointed

Accra (Greater Accra Region) 25 October 2001 - Champion club, Accra Hearts of Oak, on Wednesday 24 October 2001, beat Feyenood Salgalo by a lone goal in their FA cup one-sixteenth round match at the Accra Sports Stadium.

The game, which many Hearts of Oak fans thought would be an easy pay day for their club turned out to be a very difficult one for the Phobians, and their fans were disappointed as countless chances that came their way were wasted by Wisdom Abbey and Charles Benson.

The match, which began under the instructions of referee R.M Kwaning from Takoradi, saw Hearts dictating the pace and in the 5th minute, Wisdom Abbey nearly opened the score line but goalkeeper Dauda Jawula of Feyernood made mince meat of his shot.

Other chances that came the way of Wisdom Abbey in the 19th, 21st, 26th and 37th minute were all wasted. In the 43rd minute Owusu Stephen came in for Wisdom Abbey but that did not change the trend till the end of the first half.

In the second half, Hearts pushed more players forward and in the 51st minute, Stephen Owusu's shot, which crossed the face of the visitors' goalkeeper, had no one to connect it.

Ishmael Addo and Emmanuel Osei Kuffour came in for Charles Benson and Don Bortey respectively in the 54th and 57th minutes. The changes brought more life into the game as Hearts pilled pressure on their opponents.

In the 67th minute a goalmouth melee saw Emmanuel Osei Kuffour sending a powerful shot into the net, as goalkeeper Dauda looked on helpless.

Feyernood brought Opoku Jordan and Quartey Eric on in the 75th and 76th minutes respectively but could still not cause any harm to the defence of Accra Hearts of Oak.

The visitors nearly equalised in the 76th minute but a shot from the foot of Quartey Eric missed the post by inches. Goalkeeper James Nanor saved another attempt at goal in the 77th minute by Quartey.

Feyenood made several attempts at goal and in the 84th minute inter-positional play between Tiero William and Danladi Sheriff nearly gave them the leveller but the final delivery by Danladi missed target narrowly ending the match 1-0 in favour of Hearts of Oak.

Hasaacas shines again

Sekondi (Western Region) 25 October 2001 - Hasaacas defeated Mine Stars of Prestea 1-0 in their match played at Sekondi Gyandu Park on Wednesday 24 October 2001.

Hasaacas attacked from kick-off and moved swiftly into the goal area of Mine Stars but several shots taken at goal went off target.

With a coordinated formation, Mine Stars drove Hasaacas away from their penalty area and piled up pressure on the homers, forcing them to play defensively. From then on, both sides made several incursions and counter-attacks but to no avail till the first half ended.

The pattern of play did not change much early in the second half. However, in the latter parts of the game, both sides showed renewed determination to carry the day.

In the 77th minute, Alhassan Haruna, scored the only goal of the match to push Hasaacas into the next round.

Goldfields qualifies for next stage of premiership

Obuasi (Ashanti Region) 25 October 2001 - Obuasi Goldfields moved into the one-eighth stage of this year's FA Cup competition when they forced a 2-0 win over stubborn Amansie United in their match played at the Len Clay Stadium.

It was a 45th minute controversial penalty scored by Isaac Boakye that gave Goldfields the breather after they had unsuccessfully tried to overcome the strong opposition from the division one side.

After wasting two corner kicks in the 62nd and 65th minutes, Goldfields' Moses Mensah sent a left-footed bullet which beat goalkeeper Fusani Abdullah for the second goal in the 67th minute.

In Sunyani, Brong Ahafo Region, a 15th minute penalty goal scored by Seidu Ali of BA United gave his side a lone goal victory over their arch rivals, Tano Bofoakwa in their match played at the Sunyani Coronation Park.

Referee Osei Nsiah from Kumasi, whistled for a penalty when Mohammed Alhassan brought down Justice Opoku, who had dribbled past three Bofoakwa defenders and was heading towards goal. The match was nearly marred by rain showers, which made ball-control difficult.

Berekum also in the Brong Ahafo Region, the match between Arsenals and Savannah Stars could not come off as the Tamale team failed to report.

Interim co-ordinators for Kotoko

Accra (Greater Accra Region) 25 October 2001 – The Africa Sports reports that, to facilitate the free flow of information from Kotoko’s management to supporters through its circles, the National Circles Union of the club has appointed Ali Maradona and Mr Osei Kwaning Adams as interim co-ordinators onto the Herbert Administration.

These men will report directly to the circles. In effect, all grievances and suggestions from the supporters are to be channelled through these co-ordinators to the management to ensure order and sanity in the club’s administration.

Meanwhile the National Executive of Kotoko Circles has condemned actions by a group of Greater Accra Regional Circles that invaded the residence of the club’s chairman, Mr Herbert Mensah a couple of weeks ago and hurled insults on him for not acquiescing to some demands of theirs.

In a statement signed by the National Chairman, Mr Osei Boateng, the council declared that it has mandated the National Secretary of the union, Mr Osei Kwaning, to withdraw an earlier petition by the Greater Accra Regional Council to the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, who is the life patron of Asante Kotoko.

It explained further that, it is to avoid future occurrences of similar incidence that the two co-ordinators have been appointed, and urged all supporters of the club to channel their grievances through the officials.
