Hearts of Oak complain of assaults

Accra (Greater Accra Region) 23 October 2001 - The Management of Accra Hearts of Oak has appealed to the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to investigate the incident in which some officials of the club were physically assaulted by the local fans after their match against Hasaacas at Sekondi in the Western Region on Sunday 21 October 2001.

In a statement signed by the Administrative Manager of the club, Mr Ashford Tettey Oku, Hearts protested against the manner in which fans of Hasaacas physically assaulted officials like Messrs Ernest Quarshie, Ernest Thompson and Harry Zarkkour.

“In fact the whole team which was in a state of shock and fear, had to be kept in a room for sometime to ensure their safety. We have lost our wristwatches and mobile phones whiles that are of a journalist has been destroyed”, the statement stressed.

It said the fans violently demanded or attempted to take the mobile phones of the officials and players. “Our team was saved by the sheer bravado of our supporters as none of the security personnel or even officials of the home team were prepared to stop their barbaric acts”, it explained.

The management of the club further points out that, much as they have tried to control their teeming supporters in the wake of such unnecessary provocations, there would surely be a limit to their patience, and complained that “this is the third season in a row” that they have returned from Sekondi so traumatised after a match.

In a related development, Hearts of Oak’s technical director, Jones Attuquayefio, says that in spite of the club’s demise on Sunday 21 October 2001 at the Gyandu Park in the Western Region, danger still looms ahead for his club in the coming weeks.

He said “Even though we beat Berekum Arsenals 6-0 at the Accra Sports Stadium, they are still a strong side at home, and could create problems for Hearts of Oak. Remember they are among the few clubs who are yet to lose at home, and we have to respect them, and approach the match with more determination”.

I am ripe for national teams - Coach Sarpong

Accra (Greater Accra Region) 23 October 2001 - Coach Yaw Sarpong, chief tactician of resurgent Accra

Great Olympics, on Monday 22 October 2001, said he has proved his mettle and therefore deserves to be considered for any of the national soccer teams.

Speaking in an interview, the coach said he has over the years rescued teams from the claws of relegation and such feats should convince those in charge of the appointment of coaches, that he is worth his salt and must be given the opportunity to prove his merit at the national level.

He said as much as he would appreciate a national duty, he would not lobby for it because his achievements speak for themselves and he does not have to go round begging for such higher recognition.

"I am a professional and all I need do is to perform my duty satisfactorily while I leave the judgement to others to do. If my records do not convince those in authority, I shall not go pinching anyone for attention."

Coach Sarpong who saved Okwawu United from the drop last season has miraculously transformed a lethargic Accra Great Olympics side into a very mobile and fluid playing team since he took over from coach John Eshun, a former Black Stars captain.

He has moved Olympics from the bottom of the standings to the eighth position, and has not lost a match after nine runs in the second round of the premiership.

On the transformation of Great Olympics, the coach said his biggest asset is his ability to make the boys believe in their own abilities. “After teaching techniques and tactics, it is very necessary for a coach to make the players have faith in their own abilities. They must believe that they are good, can play good football and defeat whatever opposition that confronts them”.

Speaking on his suspension last season, the coach said he regretted what led to the ban and promised never to engage in such derogatory acts any more.

“Middendorf Ernst and I are very good friends now. We call each other often and there is no bad blood between us. After all, as human beings, we are bound to make mistakes once awhile."

Coach Sarpong was suspended for a year after he engaged Ernst Middendorf, the German coach of Kumasi Asante Kotoko in a scuffle during a league match with Okwawu United at Nkawkaw last season.

Former Black Stars Captain eyes coaching

Sunyani (Brong Ahafo Region) 23 October 2001 - Former captain of the national soccer team, Kwasi Owusu, who has been struggling to make a living by writing lotto in a small kiosk in Sunyani, says he wants to leave the lotto writing business and enter into serious coaching.

However, his major problem is that he does not have any formal training in coaching, even though he believes that he can do the job satisfactorily without any formal training.

He described himself in an interview as one of the greatest all-time strikers of the Black Stars, taking into consideration the selfless services he rendered to the nation, which went a long way in catapulting Ghana’s soccer to greater heights.

Mr Owusu who played for the Black Stars from 1967 to 1976, and was the captain of the team from 1973 to 1976, however has no plans of coaching Bofoakwa in the Brong Ahafo Region even if he is requested to do so, simply because he aims at the national team.

Meanwhile, Mr Owusu has received a set of jersey valued at about 2 million cedis on behalf of the Brong Ahafo Old Players Association. Mr Kwame Kyeremeh a member of the association, who is now domicile in Germany presented the set of jersey. – Graphic Sports
