Hearts of Oak fall at the feet of Hasaacas

Sekondi (Western Region) 22 October 2001 - Sekondi Hasaacas, on Sunday 21 October 2001, beat visiting Accra

Hearts of Oak 1-0 in their epic encounter at the Gyandu Park.

From the blast of the whistle, the two tams showed their determination to carry the day, which made it difficult for any of them to dominate play.

By the 15th minute the spectators started calling for goals and the home boys responded by putting pressure on the visitors. It was therefore not surprising that by the 30th minute, the performance of Hearts began to fall.

Taking advantage of the situation, the homeboys stormed the goal area of the visitors resulting in Issah Muhammed’s goal in the 43rd minute.

Back from recess, Hearts put Hasaacas under pressure but failed to utilise their goal scoring chances. The only goal in the match was scored in the first half. Hearts of Oak is still on top of the league table.

Kotoko consolidates their position

Obuasi (Ashanti Region) 22 October 2001 - Kumasi Asante Kotoko consolidated their position at the second spot when they spanked home side Adansiman by three goals to nil.

Kotoko neutralised the homesters' early attempt at goal and went in for the kill in the 20th minute when Stephen Oduro scored a spectacular goal. He collected the ball from their opponents' penalty area, feigned a pass and thundered home a curling shot which caught Adansiman's goalkeeper Samuel Antwi flat-footed.

Adansiman fought back but wasted a corner kick in the 23rd minute, allowing Kotoko to regain the driving seat once more as the Porcupine Warriors pressed forward, looking for a second goal.

Joe Hendricks cushioned Kotoko's lead in the 33rd minute when he headed on target from a precise corner kick by Oduro, leaving keeper Antwi stranded. Adansiman substituted keeper Antwi with Edmund Attah in the 39th minute but that did not prevent Kotoko from scoring.

Godwin Ablordey sealed the game for Kotoko when he squeezed one in, very early in the second half. After the third goal, Adansiman threw everything into the game but found the Kotoko defence too strong to beat, especially goalkeeper Louis Quainoo who dazzled with many spectacular saves.

The result leaves Adansiman neck deep in the relegation waters as bottom club, Kwaebibirem won at home against Ghapoha.

Goalkeeper in police cells for attacking referee

Sunyani (Brong Ahafo Region) 22 October 2001 – The Sunyani Coronation Park on Sunday 21 October 2001 recorded yet another nasty incident in the Star Premiere League when the reserved goalkeeper of visiting Okwawu United, Alhasan Fatau, charged on Referee Joseph Wellington with a football boot moments after the referee had signalled for the end of the match which Bofoakwa won 1-0.

Fatau who was protesting against the lone goal scored in the 84th minute by Bofoakwa’s Clovis Kambou, rushed from the bench with the boot, but as he attempted to hit the referee with it, the police stopped him.

The police, this time, managed to arrest the culprit and whisked him into police cells. According to DSP Yartey Tawiah, who led the team of policemen to the park, the police would take further action on the matter.

Referee Wellington, speaking to newsmen, expressed shock at the behaviour of the player and described the lone goal as a legal one. At press time the culprit was in police custody.

In the match in question, Bofoakwa beat Okwawu United 1-0. Clovis Kambu scored the lone goal in the 84th minute. Kambu, one time player of Kumasi Asante Kotoko, received a cross from substitute " veteran" Ben Kusi in the vital area of Okwawu United, and without any hesitation buried the ball at the far side of goalkeeper Samuel Quansah.

Just before the end of the first half Okwawu's Mijimah Abdul attracted the referees yellow card for fouling Bofoakwa's captain, Abeiku Aikins.

In the 64th minute Bofoakwa's Emmanuel Ampeah also attracted a yellow card. Okwawu brought in Kyeremanteng Kwasi for Yaw Berko, but that change was nothing to deter the Bofoakwa boys from scoring in the 84th minute.

At Berekum, also in the Brong Ahafo Region, Arsenals won a 1-0 victory over visiting Liberty Professionals in their encounter.

King Faisal sinks Goldfields

Kumasi (Ashanti Region) 22 October 2001 - King Faisal, struggling to escape relegation managed a 1-0 win over Obuasi Goldfields in their match played at the Kumasi Sports Stadium.

Faisal squandered many chances, which left their supporters wondering what had become of Alhaji Grusah's team. The only goal of the match came from substitute Eric Gawu in the 70th minute.

The homesters dominated a greater part of the game putting Goldfields under pressure right from the start, and in the 17th minute, Frank Osei had Goldfields goalkeeper Rashid Campoare at his mercy but he fumbled.

In the 35th minute, Faisal replaced Ronaldo Awudu, with Joe Agyemang while Goldfields also pulled out Princeton Owusu-Ansah who got injured in the 40th minute for Yaw Owusu.

The greatest chance for the homesters to open the scores fell to Eric Gawu in the 63rd minute when after receiving a through pass from Ben Wilson, he shrugged off his attackers, dribbled goalkeeper Campoare and with an empty net in front of him, he hesitated and allowed the Goldfields defence to regroup and save the situation.

Gawu, however, made amends seven minutes later when he fired a fierce shot past goalkeeper Campoare to register the first and the only goal.

King Faisal again pulled out Joseph Agyemang Jnr for Kwabena Poku in the 75th minute and nearly had their second goal but Gawu headed over the bar.

Olympics escapes relegation

Accra (Greater Accra Region) 22 October 2001 - Accra Great Olympics' bid to escape from the relegation zone was given a boost with a 4-1 victory over Real Tamale United (RTU) to give them their fifth victory since the start of the second phase of the league. This has moved its point’s build-up to 30.

Olympics, who are yet to lose a match since the second round, kicked off and gave early indications that they were in for all the three points at stake as they piled up pressure on the visitors.

Albert Nkansah wasted a chance to score when J B Danquah centred a cross to him, but RTU's Suleman Abukari went out to make an intervention. RTU replied as they went on attack but were denied a goal in the 12th minute when Sam Addo in post for Olympics made a fine save of a deflected shot from Fataw Arola.

Olympics opened the scoring in the 18th minute through Danquah who capitalised on a defensive error by the defence of RTU to drive a low shot past Abukari.

Olympics doubled the score line in the 28th minute through a spot kick when Fataw Barns in a good position to score was shoved down in the box for Bernard Lakotey to convert the kick.

The home team continued to dominate play as the good understanding between Danquah and Nkansah kept the defence men of RTU led by veteran Bobby Rahman very busy.

With the first half drawing to a close, Olympics capped their first half performance with a fine goal from Francis Martey who controlled a cross on the chest in the box before volleying it into the roof of the net in the 44th minute.

In the second half, Olympics scored their fourth goal in the 57th minute through Kwabena Dodge who curled in a free kick from the edge box beyond Abukari.

RTU brought on Acheampong Kwame for Abass Iddrisu but this did not change the trend of proceedings as the home team continued to dominate.

Accra (Greater Accra Region) 22 October 2001 - This year's ‘Mr. Ghana Bodybuilding Competition’ would be held on 17 November 2001 at the National Theatre in Accra.

The competition, which is dubbed "Gladiators 2001 Awards", would feature 26 bodybuilders. The first three winners would be sent to the United Kingdom (UK) to participate in a similar competition by the Natural Amateur Body Building Association (NABBA) of the UK.

Mr Christian Hammond, Managing Director of Body Trading Company Limited, organisers of the competition, announced this on Friday 20 October 2001 at a media encounter to launch “Mr Ghana 2001”.

He said this year's competition would include fitness personality of the year. Under this category, prominent and busy personalities who, in spite of their busy schedule, still find at least an hour a day to keep fit either privately or at a gym, would be awarded.

Mr Hammond said with six body builders qualifying for the grand finale, the competition would demonstrate to the public that, " Body building is a portrayal and the foundation of all sports. It demonstrates the maximum strength and the flexibility of the body."

He said the company was working towards organising a West African Body Building Competition that would eventually lead to an African competition that is non-existence at the moment. He said the perception that food supplements are steroids was wrong and that they only serve as additional natural nutrients produced by the body.

Other sponsors of the competition are Budget Cash and Carry, Metro TV, Voltic Mineral Water, Accra Brewery Limited, Chicken Licking and La Palm Royal beach.

Black Queens left in the dark

Accra (Greater Accra) 22 October 2001 - The women's national football team, the Black Queens would not be able to participate in the eight-nation inaugural African

Women's under-19 championship, which kicks off on the 26th of October this year to 22nd of March 2002.

The eight African countries participating include South Africa, Nigeria, Morocco, Mali, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Niger and the Central African Republic.

Announcing the fixtures over the weekend, the Confederation of African Football-CAF, said all semi finalist teams from the African Championship would qualify for the first ever Women's under-19 World Cup.

The tournament comprises 12 countries, to be hosted by Canada from August to September next year. The under 19 championship would be held every two years.

Ghana was initially approached to host the African Championship but could not meet the demands and also failed to present a proposal to compete in the championship before 31st August.

The inability of Ghana to participate in the Championship is due to the lack of coordination and planning by soccer administrators. No plans were put in place to raise a women's under-19 team. – JoyFM
