Cornerstone demand verdict of protest against Roos

Kumasi (Ashanti Region) 09 October 2001-Kumasi Cornerstone football club has appealed to the disciplinary committee of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to come out with its verdict on the protest it lodged against Gag Roos in their first division football league match at Tarkwa on August 19.

This was contained in a letter to the chairman of the disciplinary committee and signed by Sheik Abraham Antwi, Executive Chairman of Cornerstone in Kumasi on Monday. It said the committee sat on the protest on August 30 but it was surprising that the committee had not made public its findings on the protest.

The letter said Cornerstone protested against the fielding of Ibrahim Iddrisu, Kofi Ankrah and Evans Prah in the match in line with article 32 (a) and (b) of GFA regulations. It said the refusal by Gag Roos to register these three players for the 2001 football season was against the rules stated. Gag Roos won the match 2-0.

Cornerstone demand verdict of protest against Roos

Kumasi (Ashanti Region) 09 October 2001 - Kumasi Cornerstone Football Club has appealed to the disciplinary committee of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to come out with its verdict on the protest they lodged against Gag Roos on their first division football league match at Tarkwa on August 19.

This was contained in a letter signed by Sheik Abraham Antwi, executive chairman of Cornerstone on Monday and addressed to the chairman of the disciplinary committee.

The Management of Cornerstones wondered why the disciplinary committee has not released the result of their findings till now even though the case was herd as far back as August 30.

The letter said Cornerstone protested against the use of ineligible players, Ibrahim Iddrisu, Kofi Ankrah and Evans Prah in the match and could not understand why Article 32 (a and b) of GFA regulations could not be invoked in the most transparent manner.

It said the refusal by Gag Roos to register these three players for the 2001 football season is against the rules and therefore constitute a violation of Article 32 of the GFA statutes. Gag Roos won the match 2-0.

Kwadwo Barnie, winner of this year's Ghana Open competition at the same venue scored a gross 157 points to lift the new Gold Cup donated by the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu 11 which replaced the old one won by Peter Korsah of Takoradi for keeps last year in the two-day scratch event played over 36 holes.

His closest challenger George Osei of Takoradi, scored a gross 152 points to place second, while G.W. Aryeetey also of Takoradi followed at third position with a gross 153 points on count back to beat F. Owusu-Ansah also with a gross 153 points to fourth place.

In the handicap event Edem Atiase scored a gross 137 points to win the event and was followed by P.A. Mensah also of Kumasi with 147 points while S.K. Afari scored 148 points to place third, beating Fayez Hage to fourth position also with 148 on count back.

In the youth event, S. Hage of Kumasi scored 78 points to win and was followed at the second position by Y. Odsaard with 79 points while R. Hammelmann scored 83 points to place third.

Evergreen queen golfer,Mona Captan retained the trophy she won last year with a gross 173 points and was followed by G. Kdanlazeh of Tema with a gross 175 points, beating R. Khahil, lady captain of Kumasi to third position on count back with the same points.

Kofi Nimako of Kumasi retained the title he won last year, scoring a gross 291 points in their four-day 72 hole event to win four million cedis cash.

Effa Poku who eventually placed second with a gross 293 points led with 146 points for the first two days but was overtaken by Nimako on the third day.

However, E.K. Korblah, Ghana's most colourful professional golfer exhibited some of the stuff with which he is made of and caught up with Nimako at hole 17.

But determined to retain his position, Nimako showed his prowess at the last handicap where he stroked to victory, leaving Korblah at the third position and for their prizes Effah Poku took away two million cedis, while Korblah had one million cedis.

Delivering the closing speech, Mr Joe Aggrey, Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports, commended the Asantehene for introducing and sustaining the competition.

He also commended Otumfuo Osei Tutu 11 for initiating and implementing the Otumfuo Education Fund, which he noted had received both local and international acclamation. He said his ministry viewed the institution of the fund as a way of empowering the youth for the future.

Mr Aggrey, however, observed that most of the nation's sportsmen and women came from disadvantaged homes and found it difficult to go through their education because of financial difficulties.

He therefore appealed to the Asantehene and Trustees of the Fund to pay special attention to the young men and women who excelled in the sporting field in the award of scholarships under the fund to enable them to pursue their education and at the same time give off their best in sports.

Presentations were made by the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu, supported by Mr Prince Adu Agyemang, Chief Executive of the club and Mr Kofi Bawuah, vice-chairman of the club.

Soccer-Petro win signals power shift in African club football

Johannesburg (South Africa) 09 October 2001-The traditional order of African club football again came in for a pounding this weekend as Angola's Petro Atletico qualified for the semifinals of the African Champions League and ASEC Abidjan set a new record in the same competition.

Petro inflicted only the second home defeat ever in continental competition on Egypt's Al Ahli named last year as Africa's club of the century to consolidate their position as this year's surprise package.

Petro outplayed the Egyptian team in their own backyard, going four goals up just after half-time before settling for a 4-2 win to become the first side to clinch a berth in next month's semifinals. Ahli had only ever lost once before at home in 66 matches in African club competition, stretching back to 1974.

A stunned crowed watched as Petro secured a fourth successive win in the group phase of the competition after they had started their campaign in August with a home defeat, ironically at the hands of Al Ahli in Luanda. Angolan international Flavio scored two of the four goals to stretch his tally in this year's competition to eight.

Ivory Coast champions ASEC Abidjan, who won the tournament in 1998, kept up their chances of catching Al Ahli for the second qualifying berth from the group B with a record 7-0 win over Chabab Belouizdad of Algeria on Sunday. The win surpassed the previous record score of 6-0 set by Raja Casablanca of Morocco in 1998.

The Algerian side had gone into the match already out of contention but put up little resistance in one of the worst displays yet by a north African side in continental club competition.

The defeat, however, attracted little attention in the Algerian press on Monday, preoccupied with the abandonment of the international between France and Algeria in Paris on Saturday night.

Esperance of Tunisia join Petro in the semifinals despite being held to a goalless draw on Saturday at home by Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa in group A.

Esperance were celebrating their 100th game in continental club competition but there was little for an expectant crowd to enthuse over.

But the point gained, coupled with a defeat for TP Mazembe of the Democratic Republic of Congo in the weekend's other group A match at Julius Berger of Nigeria, ensured Esperance remain on course for a third successive appearance in the Champions League final.

The Tunisian side have looked to be the only team capable of keeping up the traditional dominance of clubs from the Arab-speaking north of Africa in the competition this year. They can secure top place in group A with a draw in their last match away against TP Mazembe in Lumbubashi on October 20.

The other berth from the group will be decided in Pretoria where Sundowns host Julius Berger. Sundowns must win, a draw would be good enough to put the Nigerians through to the last four.

The semifinals will be played over two legs with the winner of group A playing the runner-up in group B and the group B winner taking on the team that finish second in group A. The final is to be played in December, also over two legs.
