UGM will break new grounds if… - Wereko Brobby

The Daily Graphic reports the presidential candidate of the United Ghana Movement (UGM), Dr Wereko Brobby, as stating that the party has a pioneer mentality intended to break new grounds towards revamping the social and economic foundation of the country if it forms the next government.

"The UGM as a party is poised to take up the challenges and tasks that confront the various sectors of the country if it assumes the political responsibility of the country", the Graphic quotes him as saying at a press conference in Accra on Monday.

Dr. Brobby also said, "The UGM is strongly convinced that the present social and economic circumstances do not befit a country that achieved political independence in 1957 and had one of the highest per capita income on the continent."

He said the party is of the view that the key to a prosperous Ghana lies in developing a well educated, highly skilled and motivated people, who are encouraged by an enabling environment of support for individual enterprise and achievement.

Fake BNI officials in town

The Ghanaian Times reports the Accra Regional Police Service as warning the public to be wary of some persons going round and posing as officials of the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) and the Criminal Investigations Department of the Police Service. According to the paper, these people apart from arbitrary arresting innocent people, have also been extorting money from shop owners especially women.

Inspector Jordan Quaye, the regional Police Commander, in an interview with the paper said such people were normally well dressed, looked smart and posed as officials from the BNI or the Police CID and told their victims that they were being sought for interrogation.

These people demands dollars as bribes from their victims, who showed resistance after they have faked charges. The police advised the public not to heed to such arrests and report such matters to the nearest police station to check their identity.

The Statesman reports that Prestea-Huni Valley Constituency Vice-Chairman of the NDC, Solomon Ntrakwa, is on police bail, following his arrest on suspicion of involvement in a murder case.

According to police sources three others, Yaw Badu, Ampofo and "Aluta", together with Ntrakwa are helping the police in their investigation.

The Statesman says it learnt at the Regional CID that policemen from Sekondi arrested the suspects at Bogoso on Thursday October 5. Ntrakwa pleaded to be allowed to attend to nature's call in the bush where he escaped.

He reported four days later to the police, in the company of Nana Gyapong Ababio, President of the Western Region House of Chiefs.

The statesman recalls that two months ago the mining town of Bogoso was thrown into shock when the headless body of a man was found lying at Cocoa Ase, a suburb of the Town, with a big whole on the left side of the chest, through which his heart had been removed.

The body has since been identified as that of Adjei Manu, a 56-year-old trader at Bogoso. The heart and the head has since not been retrieved.

The Evening News

Egle replaces Owuraku Amofa

The Evening News reports that national executives of the Egle Party after several hours of intensive campaign and lobbying, on Thursday, settled on Mr. Jacob Letsyor, a businessman to the post of acting party chairman.

Mr. Letsyor, until now the first vice-chairman of the party was preferred by most of the executives to Sam Pee Yalley, general secretary of the party.

A source told the paper that there was no reason for a substantive chairman, which the meeting was meant for, since Owuaku Amofa has so far not tendered his resignation to the party.

Some party executives the paper says questioned the constitutionality of a substantive chairman and called the meeting a "bogus" one geared to disgrace the party.

In an interview with the paper, Mr. Letsyor was hopeful that Mr. Amofa will come and although he bemoaned his inability to communicate with the party.
