'Re- think position on NPP proposal for voting

The NPP Flagbearer, Mr J A Kufuor has challenged the government and the Electoral Commission to agree to use the OAU method of voting in the December election, if they nothing to hide, reports the Daily Graphic.

The method is good and the NPP is asking for its use because it will benefit all parties contesting this year’s election, he is reported as saying.

Mr Kufuor is said to have thrown the challenge when he addressed a rally at the Gukpegu / Sabongida Constituency of Northern Region on Wednesday.

He made reference to the Electoral Commission’s recent admission that the voter’s register is bloated by about 1.5 million names, and stressed that using the OAU method of voting will weed out all ghost voters so that the decision of the people in Ghana would be pure.

"The Electoral Commission is keeping mute because it has something to hide and I want to warn the NDC Government and the Electoral Commission that if they truly care for Ghana, they should not touch fate, they should accept that method by which the very bloated and bad register will be cleansed," he was quoted as saying.

DPP critical of NPP's Vice

Mr Dan Markin, chairman of the Democratic People's Party (DPP) has described Mr J A Kufour the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and his running mate Alhaji Aliu Mahama, as “failures”, reports the Guide.

He said it was not surprising for the two to have come together because they are birds of the same feather flocking together.

Dan Markin made the comment last Sunday at Tamale Police Park where the National Democratic Congress (NDC), launched its presidential and parliamentary campaigns in the Northern Region.

Stating the reason for his assertion, the DPP chairman said Alhaji Mahama was awarded a World Bank project in the Northern region to construct roads, which was to executed within six months but after 2 years, Alhaji Mahama has not been able to finish the job.

Dan Markin is said to have alleged that the NPP Vice President aspirant has not even paid his workers and they are crying for their money, claiming he has copies of the correspondence sent to Alhaji Mahama, in relation to his contract, which Markin described as "shoddy".

On Kufour, Dan Markin said he claims to be a lawyer but "we do not know his chambers".

South Africa Envoy is a liar

The Editor of The Dispatch, Ben Ephson, has described the South Africa High Commission to Ghana, His Excellency Dr. Mogan M. Phologane as "a coward and a liar".

Reacting to a story in last Wednesday's edition of The Free Press, which reported Dr Phologane as saying he did not threaten to deny South Africa visas to Ghanaian journalists as long as he remained at post, Mr Ephson said, "perhaps, when His Execellency phoned me, he was in the mood and only got sober when the GJA issued the seven- day ultimatum. I thought he would have been bold enough to stand by his words. The envoy is right that no journalist got in touch with him. He got in touch with me. It is interesting that he did not deny our initial story on the visa threat on October 13 ".

Tony Aidoo's 'ranger' granted bail

The Ghanaian Chronicle reports that Mr James Adayuga the Gerrock Rangers Security guard who was involved in a street encounter with Dr. Tony Aidoo, Minister of Defence late last month, has been granted a ˘5 million bail by an Accra Community Tribunal presided over by Mr. Ziblim Imoro.

According to the paper his counsel, Mr. Alex Quaynor of the Akuffo Addo and Prempeh Chambers prayed the court on Thursday for bail to be granted to his client because the prosecution had completed their investigation, arguing that the offence allegedly committed by his client could not be repeated when he is granted bail.

The guard has been incarcerated since last Wednesday, following an action brought against him by the police for two contradictory statements to them.

According to the police statement, Adayuga gave two contradictory statements to them, one which said Tony Aidoo pulled a gun on him at the Dansoman Goil filling station and the other which stated that the minister did not pull a gun on him. The case has been adjourned for definite hearing on November 6, 2000.
