NPP launches campaign in Cape Coast

Cape Coast (Central Region) 18 October 2000

The New Patriotic Party (NPP), on Monday launched its electioneering campaign in the Cape Coast constituency with a renewed call on Ghanaians to vote the NDC government out of power because it has failed the nation.

A leading member of the party, Nana Akuffo-Addo, who made the call, noted that the PNDC/NDC has not been able to assist Ghanaians realise their aspirations after 20 years in power and should therefore be replaced by the NPP.

Nana Akuffo-Addo said the NPP has men and women of proven abilities capable of finding the antidote to the current economic problems facing the nation.

He said an NPP government would, among other things, offer better service conditions to workers and the police adding, " you cannot pay a person 200,000 cedis in these times and expect him or her not to be corrupt".

Nana Akufo-Addo also reiterated the need for the electoral commission to take decisions that would ensure fair and equal treatment of all political parties to ensure peaceful and fair elections.

Mr. Kofi Wayo, parliamentary candidate for Ayawaso East, repeated the party's pledge to make education and health services affordable and create more job opportunities.

He urged the electorate to use their votes, which he described as " more powerful than an AK 47 rifle", to effect a change of government to enable the NPP to lead the nation into prosperity.

Sheick Ibrahim Quaye, candidate for Ayawaso Central, appealed to the electorate to vote massively for Mr. John Agyekum Kufuor, NPP presidential candidate and Ms Christine Churcher as the constituency's Member of Parliament.

Ms Churcher accused the Cape Coast municipal assembly of thwarting her efforts to provide development projects by withholding her share of the MP's fund.

She assured the people of more projects when an NPP government is elected.

CPP can salvage the economy

Akwatia (Ashanti Region) 18 October 2000

Professor George Hagan, Presidential candidate of the Convention People's Party (CPP), called on Ghanaians to vote for the party to enable it to repair the damage done to the economy the by the NDC government.

Professor Hagan made the call at a rally at Akwatia over the weekend as part of a tour of the Eastern Region.

He said the party would continue the good work of the CPP of old by establishing factories and reintroducing the workers brigade that offered jobs for the youth, among others.

Prof. Hagan said a CPP government would adopt pragmatic measures that would bring relief to the suffering people and make Ghana, once more, the star of Africa.

Mr. Felix Amoah, first Vice-Chairman of the party noted that the NDC has nothing new to offer the nation and asked the people not make a mistake by voting it on December 7.

Mr. Amoah said the NDC has mismanaged the economy but a CPP government has ability to revamp it to bring relief to the people.

Nana Owusu Sekyere, Eastern Regional Chairman of the party called on party members to tolerate opposing views and to conduct peaceful electioneering campaign.

Vote for selfless people – NPP

Accra (Greater Accra) 18 October 2000

The NPP on Tuesday said the December election is a search for people who will work selflessly in the interest of Ghanaians.

It therefore called on the electorate not to vote for people who will seek their own welfare when they are in power.

Mr. Samuel A. Odoi-Sykes, Chairman of the New Patriotic Party, said this in Accra at a rally to introduce the party's parliamentary candidate for the Odododiodioo constituency, Mr. Reginald Niibi Okaija Ayi-Bonte, to the electorate.

He said the December poll is not just a matter of "the sake of voting and filling vacant positions" but a search for people who will work for the benefit of their communities and the entire nation.

He deploy politicians who campaign for votes and neglect the people after they are elected, and asked the electorate to be wary of such politicians so as not to be enticed by the petty gifts they offer during electioneering campaigns.

"The price for such gifts are very high and whoever makes such a mistake could not be far from being mentally sick."

Mr. Odoi-Sykes, a former Member of Parliament and the party's parliamentary candidate for the constituency in the 1996 election, said when Mr. Ayibonte is voted into power, he will liase with the banks in the constituency for loans for development projects and scholarship schemes for brilliant but needy children.

Mr. Ayibonte said the party started in the constituency and later spread to other parts of the country, and asked the electorate not to think of the party as only for Akans.

He promised to respond to the call of the people at any time and work to raise the level of basic education in the area.

CPP candidate accuses NDC of mismanaging economy

Tema (Greater Accra) 18 October 2000

Mr. Justice E. K. Jones-Mensah, CPP parliamentary candidate for Tema West has asked Ghanaians to reject the NDC's plea to renew its mandate to continue in government, saying the it has brought nothing but suffering onto the nation.

Speaking at a CPP rally at Tema Community two, he said under the 20 years' rule of the PNDC/NDC the economy has been so destroyed that the ordinary Ghanaian can hardly make ends meet.

He said workers have been laid off in the name of "divestiture" and yet the policy has contributed nothing to the revival of the economy.

He therefore urged the electorate to vote for the CPP to correct all these reverses and restore the economy to growth.

No outsider should impose anybody on us - Adzovia Clan

Accra (Greater Accra) 18 October 2000

The elders of the royal lineage of the Adzovia clan on Tuesday petitioned the Inspector General of Police to stop illegal police intervention in the selection of a new paramount chief for the Anlo Traditional Area.

At a press conference in Accra, Lieutenant Colonel Courage G.K. Togobo (Rtd), Principal Member of the Fui Agbeve Lineage of the Adzovia clan, said some government officials imposed Mr. Patrick Kobla Agboaba on them as the new paramount chief.

He said during Agboaba's confinement in August, about 300 police personnel were deployed to Anloga.

Lt. Col. Togobo said Professor Kofi Awoonor, a Presidential Aide, Dan Abodakpi, Minister of Trade and Industry, Lt. Col. Ben Akafia, Chief of Defence Staff, and one Francis Segbedzi created the impression that the NDC and the President were behind Mr. Agboaba's selection.

All these government officials come from the Anlo Traditional Area.

Traditionally, the selection of a chief in Anlo state rests in the hands of a selection committee, which consists of the representatives of the three royal gates - Drafor, Agbeve and Nyaxoenu.

According to Lt. Col. Togobo, only the Nyaxoenu gate supported the selection of Agboaba.

"We the elders have decided not to fall for the bait of a chief who has the key to the Castle because it could turn out to be a Trojan horse.

Above all, the stool is the embodiment of the soul and unity of the people of Anlo and should not be exposed to the vagaries of partisan politics," Lt. Col. Togobo said.

He said initially a majority of the elders of the royal household objected to Mr. Agboaba's selection and they suggested the stool should be consulted.

He said Prof. Awoonor later sent instructions that the stool should not be consulted, and that once Mr. Agboaba was elected, he should be confined.

Lt. Col. Togobo said the royal family ignored Prof. Awoonor's instruction and attended the consultation ceremony, which rejected Mr. Agboaba.

"We want to state that Agboaba is not from the royal lineage and as such is not fit on moral and behavioural grounds to become Awoamefia of the Anlos," he said.

"It is better to rely on the time tested traditions regarding the criteria for the selection of our chiefs... rather than on improper and uncertain promises of dubious origins that are not known in Anlo," he added.
