Two companies to
face tribunal on Friday
Kumasi (Ashanti Region) 18 October
2000
Two companies are to appear before
the Kumasi Community Tribunal on Friday, October 20, for failing to comply with
directives to stop packaging processed water in the metropolis.
This followed a writ of summons by
the Kumasi Metropolitan Environmental Health Department to the managements of
the two companies on Tuesday.
They are Blessed Treated Water at
Adiebeba and Clouds Fresh Filtered Water at Akwatialine.
Mr. Don Wantungo, Environmental
Technologist at the Kumasi Metropolitan Authority (KMA) and a joint task force
of the Department and the Association of Processed Drinking Water Producers
issued the writ after their operations were closed down last week for failing
to fulfill basic conditions for operation.
The writ said their continued
operation was in contravention of the KMA abatement of nuisance by-law of 1987.
The task force closed down the
operations of the two companies and five others for operating under unhygienic
conditions.
They were not operating with the
appropriate gadgets, filters and protective clothing for their workers.
In addition they are not
registered with the Registrar-General's Department, the KMA, the Ghana
Standards Board (GSB) and the Foods and Drugs Board (FDB) to operate.
Mr. Patrick Adu-Gyamfi, an
Executive Member of the Association and member of the task force appealed to
all drinking water processors to operate under laid down regulations to produce
quality and healthy water for the public.
He urged all operators to attend
their monthly meetings held at the offices of the Ghana Standards Board (GSB)
in Kumasi to be educated on the modalities for efficient operation and proper
location of their companies for easy identification.
