AGI to promote industrialisation in VR

Ho (Volta Region) 13 October 2000

The Association of Ghana Industries (AGI) is initiating plans to promote industrialisation in the Volta Region.

Currently, the association is negotiating for a 250,000-dollar deal with an Indian company to transform the Sokode Biscuit Factory near Ho into a modern sustainable enterprise.

Prince Kofi Kludjeson, President of the AGI disclosed this on Wednesday at the fifth in a series of regional launchings of the Ghana Industry and Technology Exhibition (INDUTECH) 2001 in Ho.

He said the AGI is also negotiating with a United States company for the establishment of a cassava starch factory in the Hohoe district.

"Sokode Biscuit," a widely patronised, tasty but poorly packaged pastry has been on the market for the past 40 years.

Prince Kludjeson said the AGI will also promote the manufacture of foam products, support weaving and tourism in the region.

Lieutenant -Colonel Charles Agbenaza, Volta Regional Minister said the establishment of "West Africa Cement" (WACEM) factory at Aflao as the second Macro industry after Juapong textiles in the Volta Region, is transforming the socio-economic life at Aflao and its environs.

He said with 400 employees and many more benefiting indirectly from the cement factory, crime wave has reportedly gone down in the area.
