Gbeho won't step down

The Daily Graphic reports that MR. James Victor Gbeho, Minister of Foreign Affairs and a leading member of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), who is contesting the Anlo Constituency seat as an independent candidate, will not withdraw from the race.

According to the Graphic, Mr. Nelson Sena, Campaign Manager of the Minister said this in an interview with Graphic soon after concluding discussions with the foreign minister currently on an official duty tour to China.

He said, " I can assure you that Mr. Gbeho would not only be a candidate in the race for the Anlo seat but would also be the next Member for the area." Mr. Sena is reported to have said in reaction to a seven-day ultimatum given to Mr. Gbeho to withdraw from the race or face disciplinary action.

Mr. Gbeho's decision to stand as independent candidate stems from the fact that the people and chiefs of the area want to have him as the preferred candidate, the Graphic  reports the campaign manager as saying.

Police charge Tony Aidoo's victim for deceit of public officer!

The Crusading Guide reports that James Adayuga, the victim of Deputy Minister of Defence, Dr. Tony Aidoo's gun-pulling pranks on September 5, 2000 has now been charged for deceit of public officer.

According to the paper, Adayuga was to be put before court last Tuesday, but according to the Deputy Commissioner of police (DCOP), Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Mr. Wemegah, the prosecutor in charge of the case encountered some technical hitches and had to defer his arraignment to the next day, 11th October, 2000.

Mr. Wemegah said Adayuga had deceived the police in the first statement he gave, hence the levelling of the charge of deceit of public officer against him. He also said Adayuga’s  retraction of his initial statement that "Dr. Tony Aidoo did not pull a gun on me", constitutes deceit of the police.

According to Mr. Wenegah, Adayuga's inconsistency was an obstruction in the investigation into Dr. Tony Aidoo's complaint that he had concocted a story to defame him (Tony) and jeopardize his security, the paper reports.

When reminded that Adayuga did this under the inducement of his boss to make false statements, the DCOP said, "a lie is a lie, it does not matter whether you were induced or not".

The GCOP is also reported to have said; "you are lucky he has retracted what he said at first, because we were coming for you Sedi (the reporter). So thank God".

The Ghanaian Times

School heads lock up textbooks?

The Ghanaian Times reports that some textbooks supplied by the Ministry of Education to some schools for distribution to junior secondary school students are still being kept in the stores and warehouses.

The paper says this behavior by some school heads does not only contravene the Ministry's directives but also hampers efforts at eventually achieving a one-to-one distribution ratio of textbooks in the classroom for effective teaching and learning.

In a speech read for the Minister of Education, Mr Ekwow Spio-Barbrah on Tuesday, he deplored the attitude and advised district directors of education to get actively involved and ensure efficient distribution of textbooks to be certain that the pupils actually received them.

He was opening the Seventh Annual Conference of district directors of Education dubbed "CODDE 2000". The three-day conference is under the theme "Education (FCUBE) in retrospect and the way forward".

The Evening News

Akufo Addo praises Rawlings

The Evening News reports that, Nana Akufo Addo, NPP member for Abuakwa, yesterday praised President Jerry John Rawlings for his initiative in traveling to Libya to help evacuate the large number of Ghanaian migrants from that country.

He is reported to have made the commendation while contributing to a statement made in parliament by Mr. Hackman Owusu Agyeman, the NPP member for New Juaben North, on the harassment of Ghanaians in Libya.

Nana Akufo Addo argued that the solution to Ghanaians suffering in foreign countries lies in the effective performance of the economy, adding that the dramatic personal intervention of President Rawlings to deal with the situation at first hand was recommendable.

This the paper said brought Nii Adjei Boye Sekan to his feet to congratulate Nana Akufo and ask him to advice members of the minority to distinguish issues of national concerns from partisanship.

Nana Akufo Addo continued by adding that, racist treatment of Ghanaians in foreign countries does not augur well for continental co-operation and asked the government to  take steps to ensure that the current incidents in Libya does not sour the relationship between the two countries.

Murder of judges & soldiers- Agyepong replies Mills

The Independent says Kwabena Agyepong, son of one of the three judges and a soldier murdered 18 years ago does not intend to give up his call for a new enquiry into the murder of his father and three others.

Speaking to the paper, Mr. Agyepong, said he is not satisfied with the view expressed by the NDC Presidential candidate and Vice-President of Ghana, Professor Evans Atta Mills at his press conference last Tuesday that he does not think "anything can be done or served by re-opening inquiries into their deaths".

Mr. Agyepong, a civil engineer by profession who was about 20 years when his father and the others were killed has in the last few months been waging a campaign to get a new enquiry to establish the truth about what he terms the unsolved murder of his father and three others.

Kufour to debate Atta-Mills

The Vice-President and flagbearer, Prof. Evans Atta-Mills has successfully passed a test of encounter with the press after most probably going through an intensive coaching and preparation, reports the Guide in a front-page story.

According to the paper, his next line of action after convincing his party members and cronies of his capability to debate any presidential candidate, is to face the most popular presidential candidate, Mr. J.A Kufour of the NPP, in public.

According to the Guide, insiders said on Tuesday that NDC big-shots having been satisfied with the Vice-President's first encounter with the press, are putting together plans to pitch their presidential candidate, Atta-Mills against Mr. Kufour in the presidential debate to teach him a "lesson"
