All is not well with education - Kyere

Accra (Greater Accra) 12 October 2000

Mr Kwabena Kyere, a Deputy Minister of Education, on Wednesday admitted that all is not well with the educational system in the country and that efforts were being made to redress the situation.

He conceded this when he faced a barrage of questions ranging from poor teaching, inadequate workshops and poor inspection of schools from the Minority.

The Reverend Samuel K. Kwofie (NPP-Ahanta West) had asked the deputy minister as to when all junior secondary schools would be provided with workshops to achieve the objectives of the educational reform, now in its 14th year.

He also asked when action would be expedited on the transfer of mission schools to their religious founders and when the ministry would provide tools for a vocational school established by the World Vision International at Abura.

Mr Kyere said it was not the policy of the ministry to equip private schools and that the Abura Vocation School would have to benefit from Vocational and Resource Centres being set up in each region with the support of the Netherlands government.

It is the duty of district assemblies to provide workshops and equip them with tools as and when new schools are set up.

He said where the facilities are not provided, a cluster of schools would have to use common workshops to be provided by the government within a locality.

On mission schools, the deputy minister said "government has already announced its desire to hand over the schools to the religious bodies, which established them if they are prepared to bear the full cost of operating them without subsidies".

"Detailed guidelines for handing over such schools are being prepared by the Ghana Education Service (GES)."

The Ministry will, however, guard against any hasty decision over the matter to ensure that every step taken would be in the supreme interest of the Ghanaian child, he explained.
