ECG worker jailed for stealing cables

Asamankese (Eastern Region) 12 October 2000

Charles Yaw Frimpong, a 26-year-old electrician of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), was on Tuesday sentenced to seven years imprisonment in hard labour by the Asamankese Circuit Court for conspiring to steal and stealing one drum of cable wire valued at 19.6 million cedis. He pleaded guilty.

Superintendent James Bruce in charge of the Nsawam Police told the court, presided over by Mr S.S. Appiah, that on September 11, this year, the accused person hired a cargo truck with registration number GW 2436 R to Ahodjo, near Nsawam, to collect the item.

Prosecution further said Frimpong contacted one Mr Kwabena Kwaafo, Chairman of the Ahodjo Electrification Project, and others that he had been sent by the Chief Executive of the ECG to convey the drum of cable to the ECG head office in Accra.

Mr Kwaafo and the people, however, became suspicious and reported the matter to the police.
