The Evening News

NDC disowns Gbeho, others

The Evening News reports that the leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has advised its supporters not to waste their votes on party members who have decided to go independent in the December election.

The paper quotes the party general secretary Alhaji Yahaya as saying, "we have not approved of the nomination of any independent candidate and nobody should vote for them. This he is reported to have said in the Upper West region where he introduced the eight parliamentary candidates for the December elections.

He advised party supporters to be mindful of those who profess to be NDC members and yet stand as independent candidates.

Evening News recalls that prominent NDC members including Victor Gbeho Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Alfred Agbesi, private legal practitioner among others, who failed to get party approval to contest parliamentary seats in the Anlo area in the Volta Region and Ashiaman in the Greater Accra Region among others, kicked against the NDC and went solo despite a week ultimatum given them to rescind their decision.

NPP wants to kill me - Alice Boon tells Rawlings

The banner headline of the Guide says despite the call by Ghanaians on political parties to refrain from the politics of insults in this campaign season, the ruling National Democratic Congress, (NDC) went ahead to issue personal attack on Mr. Goosie Tanoh, Presidential candidate for the National Reform Party, (NRP) and Mr. J.A. Kufour, presidential candidate for the New Patriotic Party, (NPP).

At the NDC 2000 campaign launching last Sunday at Wa in the Upper West Region, President Rawlings, the last to speak at the rally, using words like "Nonsense", "Provocative", the NDC referred to the opposition as wicked and bad people who should not be voted for.

This the paper recalls started when Mrs. Alice Boon MP for Lambusi told the crowd of her experience with the opposition on her first day in Parliament, having been asked by the president to do so.

Speaking in Wala (local language) and English, Mrs Boon, told the crowd that she was made fun of by the NPP members in parliament after she had lost her baby and had become pale and isolated herself, after the parliamentary by-election, which she had won.

She is reported by the paper to have recalled that at a point in time when she was going for her snacks in parliament, she overhead one of the opposition members say "You have not seen anything yet." She accused the NPP of trying to eliminate her through any means since she defeated the NPP in the by-election.

240 fake voters exposed

The Dispatch reports on a two-page advert placed by the chairman of the Electoral Commission (EC), Dr Afari-Djan 11 days ago.

The advert headed 'Removal of Suspected Fraudulent Names From Voters Register 2000’, said the EC had reasons to suspect that 240 names on the Voters Register for the Ga District in the Greater Accra Region were probably fraudulent.

It challenged the 240 people to prove their identities within 30 days or have their names removed.

According to the paper, as at the time of going to press, no one had shown up. It says credible sources close to the Greater Accra Regional office of the EC revealed that they had a tip-off from three people who had actually taken part in the fraudulent exercise.

It was followed up to the computer room where personnel working on the register were asked to check forms from New Achimota and it was realised that 240 of the forms had been shaded with pen instead of pencil.

Concerning the voters register, which the paper said was bloated by 1.5 million voters, the source explained that excess voters cannot be attributed to any particular political party.

BNI bodyguard in shooting drama-victim in cardio center

The Free Press writes that a reported warning shot fired by the bodyguard of the BNI director apparently to ease traffic jam caused by a road block mounted by workers on the Adomi bridge at Atimpoku, has resulted in one of the workers being rushed to the hospital with serious chest wounds.

The incident is said to have occurred on the 6th of October 2000, when the BNI director, Mr. Yaw Donkor, was traveling with his 30-year-old bodyguard, Bernet Yeboah from Accra across the Adomi Bridge.

According to the police at Koforidua, one Karimu Sulemana, driver of a Toyota bus refused to oblige when he was signaled to stop by a worker of Wusuya Construction Company Ltd, which is currently undertaking some renovation work on the bridge.

This created traffic jam and pandemonium broke out during which Yeboah came out, apparently to ensure order. He allegedly fired two warning shot of which one hit Ibrahm Okine, 42 one of the workers of the company. He was transferred to Korle -Bu from Akosombo Hospital that same day.

According to the paper, he has since been admitted at the Cardiothoracic Unit of the hospital, where he is said to be responding to treatment.

The suspect was arrested and put in police custody at Akosombo and later sent to Koforidua police station where he was granted enquiry bail last Sunday.
