Mobil manager charged with stealing 256.5 million cedis

Accra (Greater Accra) 10 October 2000

Charles Asante, Manager of Adeiso Mobil Station in the Eastern Region, who allegedly stole 256.5 million cedis belonging to Mobil Ghana Limited, on Monday appeared before a circuit tribunal in Accra.

Asante pleaded not guilty to stealing and was granted 200 million cedis bail with two sureties to be justified and also ordered to deposit a landed property. He will reappear on October 23.

Police Inspector Joseph Kwame Anneh told the tribunal, chaired by Mr. Mohammed Nabon, that on September 13 this year, an audit team from the company's headquarters detected a shortage of 256.5 million cedis in Asante's books.

Asante could not account for the shortage and was traced to Accra and arrested.

Inspector Anneh said Asante told investigators that he had used part of the money to construct a building at Anyaa in Accra and claimed that thieves broke into his office and made away with the rest of the money.

Driver fined and banned for a year over traffic offences

Asamankese (Eastern Region) 10 October 2000

A taxi driver, Francis Adamu, was on Monday fined 750,000 cedis and banned from driving for a year by the Asamankese Circuit Court for contravening traffic regulations.

Adamu pleaded guilty to four counts of failing to stop when ordered by the police and for not possessing driving licence, insurance and road-worthiness certificates.

Detective Police Inspector A.K. Osei told the court that Adamu, who was driving a taxi cab from Kade to Boadua, was signalled by police on duty to stop.

He, however, sped off and was chased by the police. But as he negotiated a bend, his car hit an ice chest by the roadside, and landed in a gutter where the engine stalled. Adamu quickly jumped out of the car and took to his heels but he was chased and arrested.

Police then found out that Adamu did not possess a valid driving licence and that the vehicle had no insurance cover and road-worthiness certificate.

The judge, Mr. S.S. Appiah, told the prosecutor that Adamu should also have been charged with dangerous driving, noting that in running into the ice-chest and gutter, he could have hit the iced-water seller if she had been around.

He suggested that in future, the owner of any vehicle, who does not have the relevant documents, should be charged.

Teacher, six other face murder charge

Kade (Eastern Region) 10 October 2000

Juliana Mansah, a 21-year-old teacher, was on Monday remanded in prison custody by the Kade community tribunal over the murder of her boyfriend, Kwadwo Bassaw-Esuon, 28, at Boadua, near Akwatia in the Eastern Region.

Kwadwo's body was found with multiple wounds at the side of the road in the early hours of October 2. Also charged with Juliana are her 50-year-old mother, Adwoa Dina, and five men. They are Kwame Ansong, 24; Samuel Oware, 28; Joseph Osawaru, 28, all labourers, and Wisdom Afari, clerk, and Henry Norgah, 30, teacher, all the six persons are also in custody.

The seven, whose plea were not taken when they appeared before the tribunal, chaired by Mr. Oppong Kwae, will re-appear on October 18.

The tribunal heard that all the accused persons, with the exception of Norgah, live in the same house at Boadua.

There had been frequent quarrels between Kwadwo and Juliana, who shared the same room, resulting in Juliana's mother threatening to eject the deceased from the house. She however changed her mind and gave the deceased a separate room in the house.

The prosecution said at about 12.30 a.m. on October 2, Juliana alleged that she was asleep when Kwadwo entered her room through the window, poured petrol on both the mother and her and attempted to set them ablaze.

Juliana said she raised the alarm and the other accused persons came to the scene but Kwadwo ran away only to return later with a stick with which he attacked her mother.

Ansong alleged that he went to intervene but Kwadwo hit him also with the stick and then escaped. At about 1.45 a.m., Juliana went to the Akwatia Police Station to lodge a complaint of assault and threatening against Kwadwo.

The prosecution continued that at about 1.30 a.m. the same day, Kwadwo was found dead about 400 metres from the main gate of the Ghana Consolidated Diamonds on the Boadua-Asamankese road with deep cuts on the forehead and back of the head. He also had abrasions all over his body.

After investigations, it appeared the deceased was murdered somewhere and dumped by the roadside. An autopsy on Kwadwo's body is expected to be conducted on Monday at the Asamankese Government Hospital.
