Referee Bob Sackey for WBC convention

Accra (Greater Accra) 3 October 2000

Referee Bob Sackey, the highest ranked Ghanaian boxing referee has been invited by the World Boxing Council (WBC) to its millennium convention slated for Mexico City from October 21 to 27.

Speaking to GNA Sports on Monday, the youthful referee said the invitation would afford him the opportunity to participate in a training and assessment course, which would improve his rating.

He said he is determined to put Ghana's name on the world-boxing map with a distinctive performance to enable him to officiate in top boxing tournaments.

"At the moment, I am rated among the top ten in the world and it is my determination to be number one very soon."

Referee Sackey attributed his phenomenal rise to the inspiration and support he receives from Mr. Eddie Papoe, a WBC judge and a top brass of the professional boxing board, particularly Nii Quaye Mensah, president of the Commonwealth Boxing Commission.

The referee advocated the introduction of periodic courses or workshops for Ghanaian boxers in order to make them conversant with the rules of the sport as they keep on being amended now and then.

"Boxing is a living sport. The rules are not fixated. They are being revised now and then and it is appropriate for a boxer to know the latest additions to the rules. It will enhance his chances in a fight, he said"

Bob Sackey departs Accra on Tuesday, October 17 to London, en route Mexico.

Camelot to tighten security

Accra (Greater Accra) 3 October 2000

Camelot Ghana Limited, ticket printers for the Ghana Football Association (GFA) used for premier football league matches, is to take measures to forestall security breaches in its operations.

This move is sequel to the arrest last Sunday of a part time worker of the company who was alleged to have printed and sold his own tickets during the Accra Hearts of Oak and Great Olympics local derby at the Accra Sports Stadium.

In a statement signed by Mr. John Colin Villars, Acting Managing Director of the company, Camelot pledged to co-operate with the GFA in assisting the police in their investigations.

Consequently, series of meetings have been arranged between Camelot and the GFA to address the issue.

Meanwhile, feelers received by GNA Sports revealed that the suspect, whose name is being withheld for security reasons, is a full time worker with the Ministry of Finance, but works with Camelot on part time basis.

The main suspect was arrested when a tout, who was caught selling un-authorised tickets mentioned his name as the one who gave him the tickets.

The incident is a serious blow to Camelot, as the company is a market leader in security printing in the country, with the banks and other commercial entities as their clients.
