Labourer gets 12 months for stealing palm fruits

Asamankese (Eastern Region) 18 Oct. '99

An Asamankese circuit court has sentenced Kwaku Appiah, a labourer, to 12 months' imprisonment in hard labour for attempting to steal palm fruits from the plantations of the Ghana Oil Palm Development Company at Kwae in the Eastern Region.

According to Chief Inspector John Boateng, Appiah was arrested by security men on patrol on October two following a tip-off.

The security men pounced on Appiah and two others, attempting to harvest palm fruits, but the two managed to escape.

Chief Inspector Boateng said one of the suspects, who is on the run, threw a harvesting knife at a security man, injuring him in the face.

Appiah, he said, admitted the offence in a cautioned statement.

He pleaded guilty.
