First personal finance show opens

Accra (Greater Accra), 14th October 99

The first Personal Finance Show, aimed at showcasing financial products to Ghanaian investors, opened in Accra on Thursday.

It is organised by AITEC Ghana, an African Information Technology (IT) Exhibitions and Conference organisers in collaboration with the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation, the High Street Journal and the Ghana Association of Bankers.

The show, dubbed "the Personal Finance Show '99", will, among other products, showcase pension and insurance schemes such as health insurance, tax plans, brokerage and banking services, mortgage financing institutions and investment opportunities available on the stock market.

Eleven companies, including the Agricultural Development Bank (ADB) and Barclays Bank, Fidelity Discount House, CDH Finance Holdings Limited, Home Finance Company (HFC) and the Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE), are exhibiting their wares.

The rest are the National Trust Holding Company (NTHC), Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT), Phoenix and State Insurance Companies.

Mr. David Lamptey, Member of Parliament for Korle Klotey, opening the show, being held in his constituency, said effective management of personal finance in a fast developing world has become an integral part of the daily lives of individuals.

"It is in this direction that the efforts of AITEC Ghana, aimed at creating a platform for the financial and insurance sectors and individual investors to dialogue in a business environment is very much appreciated.

"With the emergence of non-banking financial institutions, we hope your efforts will complement the traditional banks in guiding potential investors and individuals in making the right decisions about their financial resources."

Mr. Lamptey noted that the choice of Ghana for the show is largely due to her economic achievements and fast growing consumer groups who are endowed with a substantial spending power.

"This makes Ghana an obvious choice for investors because they are guaranteed a good return on their investments."

Nii Armah Addy, a sales representative of AITEC, said the show is targeted at the fast growing group of middle to upper income earners with higher levels of disposable income available to provide themselves and their families with long term financial security.

Mr. Kwami Ahiabenu the second, Executive Director, AITEC Ghana, said the company is not discouraged by the small number of exhibitors since this is the first time such a fair is being organised.

"This is a syndrome associated with first time shows but we hope to see an improvement next year."
