Soccer: Okwawu failed to pay 30,000 DM to Royal - Official

Accra (Greater Accra) 05 Oct. '99

Mr. Ernest Nana Adu, a representative of Royal Sporting Football Club, a second division club in Ghana, told the resumed sitting of the Gbadegbe Commission on Monday that Okwawu United failed to pay them 30,000 Deutsche Marks (DM), being their share of the transfer fee for Emmanuel Bentil.

Bentil, captain of the winning Black Starlets ’99 side was transferred from Okwawu to the juvenile side of German’s Bayern Munich in 1995 for 100,000 Deutsche Mark.

Mr. Adu told the Commission which was sitting after a two-week break, that Okwawu bought Bentil from Royal in 1993 with a clause in the contract that entitled his club to 30 per cent of any further transfer that is made.

He said Okwawu duly transferred Bentil two years after signing him on but failed to satisfy the terms of the Okwawu-Royal contract.

He said while records available to his club showed that Okwawu paid the Ghana Football Association its 10 per cent share of the transfer fee, they refused to give to his club their rightful share.

"The only attempt they made was to give us two post-dated cheques for 550,000 cedis and that was even dishonoured by the Agriculture Development Bank," the Royal club official said.

Mr. Adu then tendered into evidence the cheques, which he claimed were given to him by Mr. Jascot Ampadu, Chairman of Okwawu at the time.

Mr. Justice Sule Gbadegbe, the Commission Chairman, asked Mr. Adu to reappear on October 11 as efforts will be made to get Mr. Amapadu to appear before it.

Meanwhile Mr. Boye Sowah, owner and Chairman of Zebi F/C has been given up to October 19 to settle a balance of 7,000 DM, belonging to Fire Armour with the Commission.

Fire Armour which was at one time merged with Zebi as ‘Zebi Fire Armour’ were to collect 11,000 DM as their share of the transfer money of Edwin Bediako, former player of the twin club who secured a German contract through Afienya United.

By an arrangement between the officials of the one time club, Mr. Sowah was mandated to collect the amount from Afienya, use 4,000 DM on himself and give the rest to Fire Armour. Although Mr. Sowah did collect the money as arranged, he failed to honour the part with ‘Fire Armour’.

Mr. Sowah explained that he used the money in running Zebi F/C, who have now broken away from the old 'Zebi Fire Armour' but the Commission did not accept his plea.

Mr. Sowah, has since deposited 4,000 DM of the 11,000 DM with the Commission,

Cape Coast (Central Region), 5th October 99

The donation to Dwarfs was in appreciation of their qualification to play in the CAF competition next year after placing second in the just ended Premier league.

To Venomous Vipers it is to motivate the club and help them prepare for the Division One Middle League, which commences on October 6. Vipers have qualified alongside six other clubs for the round robin contest which promote the two tops to the elite division.

Kumasi Sports Stadium stores re-open

Kumasi (Ashanti), 5th October 99

Stores around the Kumasi Sports Stadium which were closed about nine months ago for renovation works towards the Africa Under-20 soccer tournament early this year, have now been re-opened.

Most of the demolished structures have been replaced and bar operators and store owners have begun brisk business.

A source close to the Stadium Stores Association told the Ghana News Agency that after the association had re-negotiated with the National Sports Council (NSC), the store owners were asked to pay one million cedis each as goodwill before they could operate.

According to the source, the goodwill is subject to review every three years.

Each of the 60 store owners was asked to pay 500,000 cedis to the NSC by the end of last September and the balance to be paid by the end of January next year.

In addition, there will be a rent increase for a store from 10,000 cedis to 30,000 cedis as from next January.

Mr. Sammy Ashe, Ashanti Regional Sports Development Officer, confirmed that negotiations between the association and the NSC had already taken place and they were awaiting directives from Accra on the modalities for the release of the stores.
