Sentence on surety quashed and accused remanded

Accra (Greater Accra), 5th October 99

An Accra Circuit Tribunal on Monday remanded in custody, Joseph Osei Agyeman, a 38 year-old trader, who allegedly paid 400,000 cedis to stop a complainant from pursuing a case in which he has been accused of defiling a nine-year-old-girl.

Agyeman, whose victim later became paralysed, was bailed for 10 million cedis but jumped bail. He pleaded not guilty and will reappear on October 29.

A circuit tribunal, chaired by Mrs. Elizabeth Anderson-Yebuah, sentenced Agyeman's surety to 10 million cedis for forfeiture of bail or in default, serve six months in prison in hard labour.

The accused was arrested at his hideout in Togo and brought to Ghana to stand trial on Monday, and the tribunal quashed the sentence of the surety.

Police Inspector Alex Yartey Tawiah said sometime in December, last year, the victim's mother detected that she was walking abnormally and, therefore, sent her to hospital, where it was disclosed that someone had carnally known the victim several times.

Inspector Tawiah said upon interrogation, the victim mentioned Agyeman as having had sexual intercourse with her and he was arrested.

He said the Police granted him an enquiry bail, but he jumped bail and his surety was sentenced.
