Parliament approves Yaw Barimah, others
Accra (Greater Accra) 10 November 2001 - Four persons nominated for various ministerial portfolios were on Friday endorsed by Parliament.
They are Mr Yaw Barimah, Works and Housing, Mr Edward Osei- Kwaku, Youth and Sports, Professor Kasim Kasanga, Land and Forestry and Mr Prince Imoro Andani, Northern Region.
No adverse reports, petitions or objections regarding their suitability or otherwise on any of them came to the Appointments Committee.
Mr Freddy Worsemewu Blay, Deputy First Speaker and Chairman of the Appointments Committee, said:" All the nominees have the requisite qualification and experience to handle their respective portfolios."
In a motion for the adoption of the committee's report, he said Mr Barimah impressed the committee with his in-dept knowledge of issues relating to the sector.
"In his response to questions on water privatisation for instance, the nominee convinced the committee that he would be able to stand up to the challenges of the water sector with diligence."
He described Mr Osei-Kwaku as having the desire and commitment to promote sports and issues on the youth.
On Mr Andani, he said:" He proved to the committee that since his Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) had been focused on animating and educating the rural folk, his experience would bear on the general management for the regional administration and also strive for the economic development of the Northern Region."
Mr Blay said Prof. Kasanga convinced the committee that he would not only help formulate sustainable policies to bring a change into the Lands and Forestry but he would also be an effective implementer of such policies.
In another development, the House allowed the Citizenship Regulations, 2001, L.I. 1690 to mature to make it operational. The Citizenship Law was passed last year and given presidential assent on January 5 this year.
Such instruments take 21 sitting days to mature. The house either allows it pass or reject it wholly.
