NPP Chairman sues Vice Chairman for defamation

Wa (Upper West) 06 November 2001- Alhaji Abudulai Issahaque, Upper West Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has filed a suit at the Wa High Court seeking general damages against the Regional Vice- Chairman, Mr Chiiri

Borroh Gbekature for defamation.

The plaintiff claimed that the defendant caused the publication of a press statement dated July 14, alleging that he could not account for 40 million cedis donated by the NPP for distribution to constituencies in the region during the presidential run-off.

According to the suit filed on November 1 on behalf of the chairman by Mr Yaw Boafo of Gye Nyame Chambers, Kumasi, Mr Gbekature said not a pesewa of the amount was given to any of the constituencies.

Alhaji Issahaque further claimed that the publication created the impression that the money was actually received by the Regional Minister, who was then the Regional Secretary of the party and lodged it into his personal accounts.

He said his image has been dented by the publication, which was widely circulated with copies to the President and Vice-President, the National Chairman of the party and the security agencies.

Mr Gbekature has been given eight days in which to enter appearance after being served with the writ on November 2.

In August, this year, some constituency executives of the NPP in the Region led by the Mr Gbekature in a resolution made several allegations against the Regional Chairman and attempted removing him from office.
