Accra Bourse Index closes unchanged
Takoradi (Western Region) 03 November 2001-The Commissioner of Customs Excise and Preventive Service (CEPS), Mr. Isaac Opoku-Ntiamoah on Friday advised Ghanaian importers to budget for all goods before bringing them into the country.
He decried the attitude of many importers, who do not make the necessary arrangements in terms of tax, transport and other financial obligations when importing expensive items into the country. Mr Opoku-Ntiamoah was speaking in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Takoradi.
He noted that any delay in the payment of clearing and custom charges, within the 60-day grace period, would result in the seizure of the goods by the state. The commissioner therefore, urged prospective importers, to ascertain their tax rates and charges before importing any product into the country.
Mr. Opoku-Ntiamoah said that the acute accommodation problem facing personnel in the region would soon be over, adding that negotiations are underway for a new building to cater for their needs.
He challenged personnel of the service to devise new methods of revenue collection, to increase their annual targets. The commissioner urged them to intensify their preventive services in order to reduce the rising incidence of smuggling along the country's borders.
