Driver, two mates held over attempted fuel smuggling

Bawku (Upper East) 27 November 2000

A driver and his two mates have appeared before the Bawku Circuit Tribunal for attempting to smuggle 36 drums of petrol and diesel valued at about 10 million cedis out of the country.

Haadi Ayamba, the driver, Abubakari Yakubu and Fuseini Labaran, charged with possessing fuel in excess of one's immediate needs, were granted a police enquiry bail to appear again on November 27.

The tribunal, chaired by Mr Kwasi Kumah, ordered that the fuel be confiscated and sold to needy government departments.

Police Superintendent William Twumasi, officer in-charge of the Bawku district police unit said acting on a tip-off, the police arrested the three men after their Albion truck (registered GR 2612J) loaded with the fuel, broke down near Bugre junction on the Bawku-Garu road.

He said the driver told the police that the man responsible for the truck and the fuel had proceeded to Bawku to get a mechanic.

According to the driver the fuel was loaded at a spot between Garu and Gambaga, but he could not identify the exact location because the owner had led them there under cover of darkness.
