Goat thief remanded again

Sunyani (Brong Ahafo) 22 November 2000

Awuni Frafra, a night watchman who stole a goat belonging to the Supervising High Court Judge of Sunyani, was on Monday remanded again in prison custody when he failed to get somebody to bail him.

A Sunyani circuit court where he is standing trial agreed to grant him bail in the sum of two million cedis but none of his relatives or friends was prepared to stand surety for him.

The court, presided over by Mr Erasmus Gyinae, therefore had no other alternative than to remand Awuni again till November 29.

Awuni's plea for bail was accepted by the court as the prosecutor of the case, Inspector Kingsley Baafi, did not object to it on the grounds that his temporary release could lead to the arrest of the butcher who bought the goat.

The butcher, known only as Kobila, was preparing the animal for the slaughterhouse when Awuni led the police to his house at Sunyani Zongo to retrieve it. Kobila has since been on the run.

It would be recalled that Awuni, alias Bombay, was arrested on November 11 when he broke into the pen of Mr Justice P.K. Gyaesayor and stole a he-goat he had castrated and was fattening for Christmas.

Awuni, who is a night watchman at a bungalow near the residence of the judge, told the police on his arrest that he had sold the goat, which has an estimated market price of 250,000 cedis to Kobila for 90,000 cedis.

He appealed for pardon for stealing the wrong goat from the wrong person but later pleaded not guilty to a charge of stealing when he first appeared before the court on November 14.
